C&T Posted January 24, 2011 Share Posted January 24, 2011 One of our cub scout mothers told me last session that since we started the cub scout reader badge using comic books her son has turned from a nonreader to a lad who now spends his lunch breaks in the school library Over the years of being involved in the Scouts as a leader of various descriptions, I did have some nice comments - and there were many times when felt like quitting, but either a young person or their mum would say something, that just made the whole thing worthwhile and reminded me why I gave up my time! My daughter has just started going to her local old folks day centre, spending an hour a week storytelling. The lady that runs the place is overjoyed as a lot of the people there hardly said a word before and now chatter away. It seems to have opened up so many of them. Often quite a few people just read quietly in one room eschewing any organised activities but last week her storytelling was packed. You are surrounded by people but for whatever reason they dont communicate. Also "young" blood often perks them up - Good for your daughter giving up time to do something special like that. She was off sick last week when it was my birthday but bought them in anyway and the girl I share my studio with gave me a chicken door stop today. She forgot it was my birthday last week.
