brizee
So i'm addicted, I have now had my chicks since early December and the family and me love them. We are planning to expand already with another coop and more chicks. I have two young daughters, one very young, so could anyone suggest suitable breeds to me. Ideally fairly easy going. I've seen and liked some Salmon Faverolles but i'm not sure as there are so many breeds out there. Definately egg layers and maybe something a bit different. I'm looking forward to anyones suggestions and pictures maybe please. Thanks
Mollie333
How about Araucana bantams? Bantam sized and lay blue eggs. Pekin bantams are very friendly and i'd recommended them to anyone with children. My girls stop laying in winter, and start laying again in February, small cream eggs. They have such personalities and are hilarious to watch. Polish/Poland hens are also very nice. They lay a small white egg. Good for children, because...They simply can't see. Polish don't mix with other breeds very much, though, so if you chose them, you would need to introduce them slowly, or keep them separated. They're great pets! ill post more pictures tomorrow
Redwing
The light breeds are more reliable eggs layers usually - Hamburghs, Ancona, Araucana, Minorca, Leghorn, Appenzeller and welsummers are all nice but can be a bit flighty Sussex, Rhode Island reds and Marans are also good though a little larger Many have 'bantam' versions For kids and pure entertainment Pekin bantams are brilliant, they lay really well normally but have broody spells where the eggs will stop for a while. My favourites Wyandottes are much the same but slightly (only slightly) less broody
chickenNutter
Redwing, just got my first Wyandotte, and she's gorgeous! Bright as a button, and although only 15 weeks, taking on all comers even though though they are 3 times bigger. I can see why you are hooked! brizee
The Pekins are beautiful, i'm being swayed down a bantom route now but I want to visit somewhere to see some different breeds in the flesh, as it were. Anyone know anywhere in or near Derbyshire. I don't mind travelling to fulfil my craving.

Plum
I'll let Bocboc tell you. Well there are lots of breeds there and lots of bantams so it was quite difficult for her to choose. I fell in love with a little buff rock bantam and blue wyandotte/opr cross which was gold laced and very cute but didn't buy any. Love window shopping. Big set up she has there. We saw Mollies boys she had taken down, they are very handsome and a ludicrous big cochin boy who looked as though he was out in his pyjamas. Mollie333
I took my boys down today. It was seeing them go, I've had them since they was around 7 weeks old. Really pleased i found them a home. She is hopefully re-homing Alice, the gold laced wyandotte boy, and keeping the 'cockerel of fate' which, to my suprise, i found out he is a lavender cuckoo leghorn. He is going to be in with white leghorn pullets. I didn't get anything, but did see some lovely birds. Was soo in love with a huge Brahma pullet, and the trio of mottled Pekins, and Silver partridge Pekin girls (i have a thing with Pekins - can you tell? ) I heard Bocboc got some nice birds, too. My Morehens is really getting bad. I want chicks, too. 14 Pekins and no broodies, yet.
