Henslaved
Had to take Ruby to the vet today. She had peritonitis and went downhill really quickly . I was considering having her abdomen drained, but decided it would be kinder to let her go. It was a really tough decision to make . She was as tough as nails with dogs and other birds and even caught a mouse once and shook the poor thing to death. But she was sweet and gentle with humans, she took her treats gently and didn't snatch like the others and she didn't even flinch at being picked up for her health checks (or cuddles ). She was the sweetest little hen I've ever had and will be missed terribly . Edited February 11, 2011 by Guest

Henslaved
Thanks everyone for your kind comments. You're so right scarlettohara, it is hard when you lose a special one. My last remaining hen Greta is also missing her FR buddy . They were always together. It breaks my heart when she goes into the nest box and roosting area looking for her . Although she does have the two guinea fowl for company when they are in the run. When they're all out FR poor Greta looks lost . Will have to get her a friend or two (or three )
gongladosh
Really sorry to hear about Ruby - we've had many a chuckle looking at the photos of her and the guinea fowl - just noticed this posting today. It's never a pleasure to lose a hen (we lost our first to peritonitis last year) but if it's of any consolation she's had a great life and has made many people chuckle. hippy chick
I'm so sorry to hear about Ruby. It sounds like she had a wonderful life with you and obviously a much loved chicken. I think you should definately get a few new friends for her buddy. When my Gwen lost her companions she was so unhappy, now she has new friends and is back to being a happy chuck again R.I.P RUBY XX
chickenNutter
So sorry about Ruby, I have a Ruby chook too, although she is in Borstal at the moment for antisocial behaviour. I would be devasted to lose her, even though she's so naughty. I hope you get another to replace her, I am sure you will always have lovely memories of her. RIP little Ruby
