ali-s
Can't see it here at the moment but I will be popping outside now and again tonight just in case. It is a beautiful night here, clear skies, thousands of stars and the full moon is so bright you would think we had street lights. I have seen the Aurora Borealis a couple of times since living in NE Scotland, it really is very beautiful The news piece mentioned disruption to communications, I wonder if that is the reason we have had no internet connection most of today and my mobile phone signal has been ropey as well

Old Speckled Hen
Really cloudy last night and will be tonight. I've seen the aurora once before at this latitude so fingers crossed you lot over in the East where it's supposed to be clearer.
Tiggy
SIL and I are planning a trip to see the Aurora next year not sure where yet Iceland or Greenland?
Old Speckled Hen
I've always wanted to visit Greenland. I visited Iceland with a friend to see the aurora. We stayed by Lake Myvatn but it snowed the whole three days we were there. Reykjavik was a strange place:bitterly cold and windy. In the evenings it was an absolute dead town till about 10 O'Clock when people piled out having had a good drink at home before hitting the bright lights. I wondered why all the locals were buying booze at the airport in duty free. It's so expensive normally. Everything is really. We had a swim in the Blue Lagoon, visited frozen waterfalls and had a skidoo ride in a white out. Great place.

Oh dear he'll miss that in July with no real darkness at all. The best time is December to February with no moon.

goodinparts
Middle child & I went to Iceland a few years ago in February - intent on seeing the aurora....We had a wonderful time, were bowled over by the dramatic landscapes, but because there was a heavy snowfall had nary a sight of those northern lights. Seeing them is something quite high on my "bucket list" - but Gloucestershire is just not going to be a good viewing point I fear.

Same happened to me. I did a lot of research after that and discovered that because Iceland is an Island there is a lot of precipitation in the winter. Rain to you and me usually but snow there so although the Lights are there you don't see them. If you go to Sweden or Norway the winter drop happens early so most of the snow has fallen by mid January if not earlier. DD and I went to Kiruna in Sweden on a 10 day Husky safari. Hard work learning and running with your team but a wonderful experience. We didn't see the sun till the day we left but still had enough twilight to mush the dogs for four hours a day, feed them, camp and drink lots of vodka The Ice hotel is really worth a visit, even if you're not staying there you can have a wander round looking at the amazing ice sculptures before you hit the Ice Bar..........
