Free anti virus download ?

Recommended Posts

Try AVG, I had the free version (in other words an older version) for a couple of years before I paid out for the latest one which means it's updated to cope with all the latest virus and trojan attacks.

A free version of any anti virus is better than nothing, but if you don't buy a current one then you will still have problems with all the latest spyware, viruses and trojans. They will slow down your computer, and even worse can hack into your passwords and online bank details if you shop online.

Whatever you use, get it installed soon.

We recently got a new laptop, & on initial connection to the wireless modem, it was infected by over 200 viruses  including one that prevented us uploading & installing the Bullguard AV that we already had a subscription in place for.

the free trialware AV supplied on the hard drive was useless - simply jumped up and down shouting 'ooh look what I found, if you pay me a fortune I might get rid of it for you'.

Luckily I have a good friend who is an IT tech and likes a challenge, so I was able to get it cleaned. Even he was gobsmacked, & we have learned a valuable lesson!

Apart from Microsoft Security Essentials, there are three major players in the AV market that provide products free for non commercial use.

All three are free versions of proper business products, so are by no means poor cousins to the likes of McAfee, Trend, Kaspersky and so on. In fact, they are just as effective as most of the front runners, and outperforming several. There is little to tell between them, although Avira is rather more blatant in its advertising for its commercial upgrades, so is a little more intrusive each time it updates itself.

I would say "you pays your money and makes your choice", but that's the good thing. If you don't like one, you can download another and try that. If you find you preferred the first one after all, there's no problem just switching back, and you can go through this process as often as you wish (or not, of course) for whatever reason.

Was your firewall enabled?

Yes, believe it or not. OH said he had understood that there was enough AV pre-installed to allow us to download our own subscribed AV. Obviously not!
