scarlettohara
Is there such a thing or do you have to pay for a subscription, I had a free trial of Mcafee with my new laptop but this has run out Edited February 21, 2011 by Guest
JillM
Try AVG, I had the free version (in other words an older version) for a couple of years before I paid out for the latest one which means it's updated to cope with all the latest virus and trojan attacks. A free version of any anti virus is better than nothing, but if you don't buy a current one then you will still have problems with all the latest spyware, viruses and trojans. They will slow down your computer, and even worse can hack into your passwords and online bank details if you shop online.
Snowy
AVG is fine in its basic free version, I've used it for years now with no problems.

Ain't Nobody Here
I've always used AVG free too with no problems . The specific page for the free download is sometimes hard to track down, so here it is for you . The free version is the one on the right hand side. Yorkshire Pudding
Whatever you use, get it installed soon. We recently got a new laptop, & on initial connection to the wireless modem, it was infected by over 200 viruses including one that prevented us uploading & installing the Bullguard AV that we already had a subscription in place for. the free trialware AV supplied on the hard drive was useless - simply jumped up and down shouting 'ooh look what I found, if you pay me a fortune I might get rid of it for you'. Luckily I have a good friend who is an IT tech and likes a challenge, so I was able to get it cleaned. Even he was gobsmacked, & we have learned a valuable lesson! debbier
Another one to consider is Microsoft Security Essentials, link: http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/ I switched to this from AVG a while back, on several pcs and am very happy with it. abwsco
Don't forget to completely remove your old AV before installing the new one. I used AVG for years but then found in got resource hoggy so have Avast on one and MSE on the other.

majorbloodnock
Apart from Microsoft Security Essentials, there are three major players in the AV market that provide products free for non commercial use. Avast AVG Avira All three are free versions of proper business products, so are by no means poor cousins to the likes of McAfee, Trend, Kaspersky and so on. In fact, they are just as effective as most of the front runners, and outperforming several. There is little to tell between them, although Avira is rather more blatant in its advertising for its commercial upgrades, so is a little more intrusive each time it updates itself. I would say "you pays your money and makes your choice", but that's the good thing. If you don't like one, you can download another and try that. If you find you preferred the first one after all, there's no problem just switching back, and you can go through this process as often as you wish (or not, of course) for whatever reason. OH said he had understood that there was enough AV pre-installed to allow us to download our own subscribed AV. Obviously not!

scarlettohara
Thank you everyone, and ANH for the link, all installed now and I even managed to work out how to uninstall Mcafee
percy049
my free trial of AVG anti virus ran out, so I tried uninstalling it. It told me I could re-install the new free anti virus directly (instead of unistalling, then gettting the new one off the website)!
