Floods all around Basingstoke - nothing unusual really - it always does in the same old places. But I see my blackcurrants are shooting out!

I was waling the dogs dowmn a country lane at the weekend and there was a whole bank of snowdrops, it was lovely. Our pond fish are starting to move about a bit more and come up to the surface so it must be getting warmer.

There were ducks on my stream today.

Boing! , as my daughters say.....its spring!

I woke in the night and listened to my first Curlew, a wonderful haunting cry redolent of sweeping windswept moorland, as much of a herald of spring up here as Swifts are of the summer.

All I can hear at the moment is cockadoodledoo from my undercroft I must let him out.

I'm still waiting for that first Curlew this year OSH - I just adore that haunting call, it's so wild and beautiful. We used to hear them a lot more at our old house than we do here - the Oyster Catchers would arrive first and their piping was so joyous - we knew that the Curlews wouldn't be far behind. Funnily enough, we lived near the Howgills then and we're not far from the coast now, but we see and hear them less.

Oh, and the milder nights and wet weather mean that at night time my lawn is full of worms playing at husbands and wives

It's far too muddy here am looking forward to a couple of days of dry weather.

Aahh, looks cute, OSH! This morning it was sunny, the birds were singing, it was warm and for a second I thought I had slept through spring! Now, at 2:16pm, the clouds have appeared. Another overcast day, and another overcast mood.

Sign of spring here is the flock of geese that very noisily fly over our house at 6am I am really looking forward to the ground drying up a bit for dog walks.

Our pond is full of frog spawn. I had planned to clear it out next week, guess I'll have to wait for Autumn now!

Our first tiny daffodils came out in the rain yesterday and we have quite a few crocus in flower. We also saw our first Long Tailed Tits this morning, we only get then at this time of year,

The snowdrops are beginning to look a little tired now, but the tulips are beginning to peek above ground. I DID have a few crocuses in and around the grass - but thanks to the chickens they are now a thing of the past! (tasty, apparently!) The potentilla was showing some new leaves....but I've pruned it hard back, along with the lavender. And tomorrow will be time to cut back the overhanging branches from the cotoneasters, pyracantha and maybe cut down the old laburnum that just gets swamped by next doors spirea. It's nice to see the lily of the valley getting ready too.

The sun came out and the crocuses opened up for about half an hour but all shut tight as soon as the clouds returned.

Aren't flowers clever the way they protect their nectaries and pollen from the rain.

Our morning chorus is being drowned out by chaffinches trying to out sing each other

The hares are out and about here and the daffs are really getting cracking now. Rather bored seeing the fat pigeons doing their thing though

Ah hares....yes I must get out earlier tomorrow as they are about here but not easy to spot and certainly gone by the time the world wakes.

I forgot about that - we saw three hares last week on the way to one of our favourite woodland dog walks

 

I do love nature, she certainly does know best.

We saw a muntjack in my Grandad's garden yesterday, it just wandered in through a gap in the fence and started munching the grass.

 

My lovely cream climbing rose that grows up my beech hedge is coming into leaf, i love that new spring green colour.

My flowering plum flowers are just budding. The bullfinches have found them.

Daffs only just starting to open - some up the road have been out for a good week now. Driving DS to work this morning I could see the weeping willows are showing nice green buds. The forsythia is out in the garden too. Even saw a queen bumble bee a few days ago. They always nest near the front door so I guess she might have been hunting a nice quiet hidey hole there again. And I've seen my first brimstone butterfly when we had sunshine last - whenever that was - it's been murky dull and damp for ages. Still dull and murky but dry and blinking cold!

I love Bullfinches- they're such a beautiful colour!

We've got lots of daffs out now and I mowed the lawn for the first time today!
