Had the chwcks for one week now and still patiently (well impatiently really) waiting for our first egg. Went to say night night to the girls and dotty (pekin) is wedged comfortably underneath jemima (Buff)...... again !!!!

 

Is it normal for them to share a nest box and sit / cuddle each other or is jemima broody or is dotty needing mothering.... ?

 

Any suggestions or advice

Some hens just prefer to sleep in the nest box rather than perching. They do also quite like to pile on top of each other it would seem. Quite often I go to lock my girls away at night time and find them all crammed into the nest box, often three lined up on the floor like sardines with one lying across the top of them If your hens are still young, they could well still like to have a comforting wing draped over them at night time too. I wouldn't worry about it too much.

I have a very tiny little Frizzle and she likes to get under my largest Silkie (who does not object at all). I've always assumed it is a mothering thing. Perhaps it is something to do with the different sizes. Do you think that your Orp just wants to mother your Pekin?

I have a retired ex batt that likes to sleep in the nesting box, and quite often my brahma bantam will sleep on her back (despite the fact she could sleep at the side of her)

As I've posted elsewhere my araucana always sleeps under my faverolle. They're both happy this way

Mine stopped doing it when they realised that one always got plucked out to be carried around when letting them out, filling water etc., in the morning

All of my 8 Nakednecks huddle together in their nesting box and spill over into the coop.. they like to cuddle up..
