Sound off-busybody neighbour!

Recommended Posts

Sorry guys just having a sound off as my neighbour has really annoyed me! I told him I was getting chickens in the summer and now he had been talking to my other neighbours saying "have you heard about my next-door neighbour ( I have a name!) she's getting chickens" grumble grumble " rats, they will attract rats blah blah". Why does everyone say that when you say you are getting chickens? So annoying! Anyone else had this negative response? P.S I'm only getting 2 hens and no cockerel. :x

I didn't tell my neighbours when I got my first three girls, I did ask if they minded before I got two more and they were fine and said it was like living in the country listening to them. I have twelve now and touchwood no one seems to mind.

Try and assure your neighbour that they won't attract rats and that they dont sell. The lady across the road from me didn't know I had hens for about 6 months. I do give my neighbours some eggs occassionally as it helps keep them happy.h

I'd keep a bit quiet about it and just get some nice healthy chooks. Once they taste your lovely eggs and see that you keep your hens nice and clean your gossipy neighbours will soon quieten down. I don't know why, but lots of people seem to imagine that you are about to set up a huge chicken farm in some squalid set up.

If me having chickens is the most important thing in the world to him then that's very sad! His wife is nice and she said she didn't mind but whether she is just saying that who knows! I think I will just not say anymore about it and just get them when I'm ready. Hope they're not researching ways to stop me having them!

This sounds exactly the same as our neighbours when we said we wanted some a couple of years ago. Check you are not breaking any bylaws then if you want them, get them when you are ready. We finally got some 2 weeks ago and can't believe we missed out on all this time we couldhave had chickens in our lives.

Well I already have rabbits and they are cleaned every week and are no problem and he's never said anything about them. I look at it this way-as long as they don't affect their lives and are not a nuisance then he can just do the other thing! Little things like that do bother me but I'm a born worrier anyway! Thanks everyone, I appreciate your thoughts and it's really nice to be able to vent with some friendly people x

If you have heard this second hand and you haven't got your chickens yet I would tell this neighbour that you saw a rat run across their garden last week. This way any sight of rats after you get your chickens can't be blamed on you  We have had no more or less rats since we had chickens. Our compost attracts a few but our neighbour's bird feeding and pond attract far more than our chicken food. Thankfully we have lovely neighbours - even so I do make a point every now and again of saying that I see the odd rat on their bird feeders

I think people assumethat chickens are noisy, mine only make a noise if they are laying or if something spooks them.

A neighbour of ours who lives four doors away told my next door neighbour that he was getting chickens and took great delight in saying how much it would annoy his next door neighbour, he was surprised when she told him that I'd had chickens for a couple of years, he'd never realised I had them, so that quickly wiped the smile off his face

Some people have said the same to me when I tell them of our plans. I have usually then politely pointed out that lots of people leave food out for wild birds and many have a compost heap, a shed etc so is the risk really that much more if the hens are clean and their feed stored properly? Not sure if I am correct in my thinking but it usually works! Good luck in winning them round. I am sure a few eggs will do the job.

Hope they move.

Good solution! We didn't tell ours, but she loves them! When we gave her eggs she was so amazed because of "how special" they were - she didn't want to eat them because of that reason! But she did and loved them! One jumped into her garden the other day and she came and told us not to moan, just to tell us in case we wondered where she was. She said she didn't mind us leaving her in her garden for the day if we wanted because of how fascinated she was by her! (white chicken) She jumped back over though  I agree with CM - tell your neighbour that you saw a rat in his garden ;) brilliant idea!

They'll get over it once they realise they are clean etc. Some people just like to moan! I just moved into this house and got chickens straight away, I took eggs round to the neighbours and they didn't even know I had chickens!! Anyway they said thanks for the eggs and took them so they can't complain now can they?!:lol:

Hehe yeah I will tell him about "his garden rat" next time I see him! Good idea! My other neighbour leaves out stuff for the birds and she did actually tell me the other day there was a rat in my garden (although I've never seen it). I suppose Mr Busybody will be spying out of his window when the Omlet van comes! He thinks he rules the road we live in as he told his other neighbours off for hanging a union jack flag outside their window when the World Cup was on! He's bored I think!

ive wanted chickens for such a long time. My biggest obsticle was my OH. When i was bought the cube as a surprise birthday present it was hidden in my next door neighbours garage  They are a retired couple and they had no issues and have said they would be happy to look after them while we were away. Another set of neighbours who have kids have spoken to my OH and told him his kids are mithering him get hens now.

So far so good. We havent advertised we have hens, we didnt ask anyones permission but we havent had any negative responses so far. As far as rats go, we have a canal (disused but restoring) at the side of our house so i am sure there are some. I always fetch the grub and any fresh food inside they have left, i dont leave food in overnight. Although we do feed the wildbirds anyway.

Yes I think I will make sure the food is taken inside every night too. I would have thought that rats wouldn't be able to get through the mesh but I could be wrong. I'm sure they wont be complaining when they get some fresh eggs. Plus I'm sure his grandson would like to come and see them too.

You might be suprised when he actually meets your new chickens. Our resident busy body, moaner, I own the street neighbour lives opposite us. I am sure if I had told hime I was getting hens he would have found something to complain about but he loves them now. He comes to see all the new girls I get and in the past has bought me corn and dandelions for them His wife brings her kitchen s"Ooops, word censored!"s over as well.

Makes me glad our busy body lives about 10 doors down. Really thinks she owns the road. She used to tell us off for racing up and down the alley way - hardly disturbing anyone considering the gardens are about 150ft away from the houses. She moaned about another neighbours chickens - despite her dog barking day and night :x

I didn't tell my neighbours I was getting chickens....I wouldn't have told them if I was getting a rabbit or guinea pig so what's the difference?

My neighbours on one side saw the Omlet van arrive and were very excited about it, I don't know if the ones on the other side know about the chickens, but as they are in a bungalow they don't overlook my garden - if someone was to complain it would be them! That is why I am going to construct my WIR between my porch and the other neighbour's porch so any sound is contained, and when people are actually in their gardens they shouldn't be able to see my girls unless they want to come round and visit them.

Well boredom does that to some people! I am only at home all day as I have a 21 month old son so he keeps me busy. Mr Busybody doesn't do much but ironically he works on the fresh egg and cheese stall at the town market every week! Well I am going to site the Eglu and run between the fence and shed which is not near his back door and is actually next to his drive and bins so it won't bother them.

Yeah what is it with us very polite folk informing our neighbours of our pet chickens? I'm sure his next door neighbours didn't consult him when they got a dog! (which incidentally howls and barks as his owners work full time).

We have a real busy body living next door to us. She was constantly moaning that our rabbit would attract rats and a few months later there were some rats spotted in the 3 ajoining gardens. She of course thought this was fantastic and would mention at any given opportunity that we have a rabbit etc etc so therefore our fault! Anyway she soon shut up when the pest control people came out and the rats were traced to her friends house next door he he he

Am waiting for her to start moaning about the chickens though, it's only a matter of time  Some people really do need to just get a life. If she moans my hubby is def going to wind her up a bit and say we are getting a pig too!
