Need advice about space inside Eglu Classic

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I could do with a bit of advice please, we have been looking into getting an Eglu Classic with the run to replace our wooden one.

But Im worried about how much space there is inside an Eglu classic, we have a bantam silkie and a bantam polish, the polish one is epileptic so has fits. Now we've been looking into maybe getting a RIR so we actually get some eggs once in a while lol! But do you think there is enough room inside the eglu for the 3 of them as the RIR is a large breed and Im worried about my polish having fits and knocking the other two around.

I know she'll knock them occasionally anyway, she does to the silkie at the moment but the silkie couldn't care less, Im just worried about it being too cramped inside an Eglu classic for a silkie a RIR and an epileptic polish!

Hi I can only tell you that I have a Bluebell (who is a big girl!) and a Leghorn. They both squash into the nestbox at night leaving loads of room on the bars. I know people have 3-4 hens in their eglus. They also seem happy in their run but get to FR everyday for various amounts of time.

Hi

Thanks for that, its really hard to work out what the Eglu is like with chickens in it! Sounds like there is room though as from pictures Id never have thought 2 large chickens could sleep in the nest box bit of it! ha ha

Does anyone have a picture of their Eglu with chickens inside it please?

And mine will be free ranging too Im just worried about space when they are shut away at night in their Eglu.

Hi, there will be plenty of room for the 3 of them. I had 4 ex batts in my classic, and there was room for more at bedtime.

Introductions, however, may be a worry. It is generally advised not to introduce one hen on it's own, although in your case the new girl will be bigger than your present girls, so may be more of a threat to them than they are to her, especially to your epileptic girl.

Information re introductions can be found in the FAQs about chickens, and is well worth having a look at if you haven't already done so.

Good luck -let us know how it goes!

Thanks for the replies Im just confused all over again now as my OH has mentioned an automatic door which we obviously can't have on an Eglu!! I have to be honest just read a lot of bad reviews about Eglu's and the customer service so thats putting me off now too :?

With introductions i was hoping as the girls we have got have only been here a week by introducing 1 new one might not be a problem, maybe 2 young chicks would be a better idea? maybe 2 x 8 week olds??

It is very difficult to know if a certain type of house will work for you.

As for introducing younger girls - I wouldn't. Being so small they would get bullied. If it was me I'd go for two POL hens and extend the eglu run.

BTW you can get automatic doors on GFD houses.

What are GFD houses? Thanks for the advice on the chicks, I thought maybe ontroducing 2 young chicks to 2 small bantams would be better than bringing two big POL hens to my little banties especially me little epileptic one. But I guess not! Good job Ive asked for advice!!

EDIT: Just found out GFD - Green frog Designs.....wow they are ugly! Lol just my opinion of course :P

I have 5 ex batts (4 of them are fully feathered now so pretty good size)...they fit very comfortably in the Eglu Classic and I would say I could have easily get another one in  Prior to having ex batts I had 5 hybrids sleeping in it...they are all large girls :D

Maybe consider bantams instead of large fowl.. RIR come in a bantam size. Wyandottes and Sussex bantams are also an option, they lay pretty well. pekins lay pretty well also but they do go broody!

If you got two more bantams you could separate the Eglu run with canes and have two halves for introductions

Be aware though that Polish do not always do well in a mixed flock as they can be prone to bullying

The Eglu itself would be ok, I have had eight bantams sleep in one before!

Could you keep your wooden coop for the introduction period maybe?

I do like the Eglu and have never had a problem with Omlet customer service but there is a healthy market in second hand Eglus too

I echo what Redwing says about Polish hens. I have 8 and they are liable to be bullied by LF. I find my ex-bats are partial to " plucking" feathers from the top knots - including my Polish cockerel. I'd go with bantams - especially as you have a Polish hen with some special needs.

Hi yeah Id definitely be keeping my wooden one which ever new coop i buy. im sure it will always come in handy :)

Bantams seem the way to go then, Id hate to give my little polish one too much stress, it makes her fits worse poor thing. Id not introduce any more into her coop but I know its not a good idea to keep just two incase something happens to one of them.

Any idea which other bantam breeds are quite quiet and aren't likely to jump fences?!

Thanks again for all the advice :)
