scarlettohara
To make raised beds and what wood do I need
Redwing
Easy! I used pressure treated timer, 2x2 posts in each corner and planks about 0.75 x 4 (inches) Cut the posts for the corners and screw the planks to them, some of my beds have the posts higher at the corners so I can rig netting up easily, others have the posts level with the bed The beds dont have to be as deep as mine, plenty of people have them just 4 inches deep but I wanted mine to be easier to tend The hard bit is filling them with soil!! j00lz_12366
we used some old scaffolding planks for ours-was only 50p a foot so not too expensive and then painted them the same colour as the WIR
beach chick
Redwing's corner posts are a good idea ours are a mix - some are old scaffold boards, others thinner bits of timber but they seem to do the trick. ours are directly onto the (very stony) ground and filled with a mix of whatever we can find - old compost, old pot contents etc, topped up with lashings of chicken by-products. if you are lazy, like me, chuck whatever you can in to fill them, and then cover in black plastic (weighted down with bricks) for a season, or even just a few weeks - the bugs and worms will do their stuff, and you can plant into relatively weed-free soil, or at least soil in which the weeds have a lesser chance... scarlettohara
I made them today, filled them and planted out some potatoes and cabbages that I had started in pots. Will post some pics tomorrow as I'm pretty chuffed with them
scarlettohara
I did it (had a litle help from a carpenter friend with the wood but did the assembling myself).
Alis girls
I see you have 2 helpers - I think they are netted off - very wise otherwise it will be stalks only
Guest
we have a mahoosive raised bed in the corner of the garden, it toook hubbie about 3 days to build it and then he had to move 3 tons of soil from the driveway to the end of the garden to fill it! The idea was it would be high enough for me to sit on the edge and do a bit of gentle gardening... that was about 3 years ago, we've filled it with strawberry plants now and it crops brilliantly

Cinnamon
We made ours about 3 years ago - here is a photo of them then, but we have this year doubled the height of them. There are another 3 opposite too - we used pressure treated timber & Hubby made them very quickly. As Poet says,it take a LOT of earth to fill them! I had one which I left at the old height & planted potatoes in - I am now having to but heaps of stuff each week just to earth them up so the bed is filled They have certainly made life easier. Hubby has even cut me a special wide plank which rests between 2 beds,so I can sit & weed
