daxigirl
Can you believe it, my lot had me turning the paving slabs up off the grass so they could inspect for bugs. Even Lisa who is not a friendly bird couldn't help herself and joined in when she realised that there was lots of tasty morsels on offer. They've got me well trained. (I thought they were being left out with all the chick this and chick that going on at the moment.) My poor dogs just look at me as if to say are you finished going through this phase yet? Duncan08
I have been digging out for a new patio and raised beds and each time I turn up a worm I stop and take it over to them. (Not actually very good for my flower beds) They are awfully distracting and keep talking to me whilst I am working and you just cant ignore them. Our dog is the same, he is a very jealous dog in anycase, if I go out in the garden and he is left in he sits staring through the window, if I dare wander over to talk to the girls he starts banging on the window, I am sure he is saying"I'm still here you know". gongladosh
done that - and I even end up disappointed if they turn their beaks up at the worms I give them!
daxigirl
They don't seem to like the big worms, slugs or millipede type things but anything else crawly seems appetizing.
peckingham palace
It warms my heart to know there are others out there as soft as I am!
bouldercroft
I was weeding and came across a few worms so I picked them up and took them over to the girls... So what? You're thinking? Well, up until a year or so ago I was pathologically afraid of worms. We have a lot of snakes in our garden so I guess they have taken over from the worms in terms of scariness but I credit the girls with getting me past my worm phobia. SO now to deal with the snake phobia...
kerryegg
I can't bring myself to give them worms but if I can find woodlice under a slab or stone or brick or bit of wood etc etc they know I'm their best friend. Sad no just a chook lover.
JillM
I have to do my digging within their netted area or they nearly strangle themselves trying to get at the woms. It takes forever, though, as I have to put the fork in gently to avoid all the beaks and toes... then lift carefully (as by this time at least one of them is havng a ride on the soil being lifted) and keep that clod of soil lifted so they can get their heads underneath and in-between to inspect for anything that wriggles. .... I don't get much done, but the girls have great fun! By the way, Bouldercroft, are your garden snakes cornsnakes?
Chortle Chook
I haven't managed to steel myself yet into giving a live wriggly to my chooks. I just feel sorry for the worms. Now that is really sad! Mind you my chooks find plenty for themselves. I've got used to the tap tap of snail shells on the patio when my Dusty (largest of my Silkies) works at breaking the shells after it has rained. fluffy chick
Well, up until a year or so ago I was pathologically afraid of worms. . I had a phobia of birds until shortly after getting the chickens! Still don't like flying birds though and close my eyes when driving if one comes close
bouldercroft
By the way, Bouldercroft, are your garden snakes cornsnakes? Red-sided Garter Snakes - harmless but slimy enough to make me scream like a girl! There are certain areas in the garden where they hang out and I just don't go there... LuckyChickenLover-
Isn't that normal? The other day I was walking along my street with my mum when we saw that our neihbour was gardening, so we asked her if we could have her snails for the girls. Now tell me I'M not sad
