Old Speckled Hen
Can you solve it? 5+5x5=................. Is it 50 or 30??? Holly Well, it's fifty years since I did any arithmetic....which is what this is. NOT maths. If English reads left to right and in the absence of any delineating brackets then the problem must read 10 x 5 not 5 +25 unless, of course it is an exercise in lateral thought where there might be a third answer, all correct, all being aspects of perception. LuckyChickenLover-
It can be either BODMAS (Orders/ Of), BIDMAS (Indicies) or BEDMAS (Exponents). 42If it isn't it should be The answer to everything And Fred I have no idea
LuckyChickenLover-
Solve this: 7? Although to be fair, I cheated. I tried! It took me long enough to find out what ∫ even means...
Couperwife
oh, integration and differentiation *sigh* i used to love that when I was at university (yes, i am very weird!!) i wouldnt know where to start now cathy x
Leicester_H
Solve this: Isn't it zero ?? (as both limits are the same (ie 2)) ?? H
Leicester_H
Solve this: 7? Although to be fair, I cheated. I tried! It took me long enough to find out what ∫ even means... In the linked example, the lower limit is one - in Fred's example, both limits are 2.
LuckyChickenLover-
In the linked example, the lower limit is one - in Fred's example, both limits are 2. I can't even get it right using a calculator! According to the website, you're right, it is

Geoid
The lower limit was supposed to be 1. In the first upload I made an error, but I changed it, photobucket must be playing up.
Leicester_H
If you have to do it a specific way, why can't the sum just show that? It's like everyone is making it up and I always will get the answer wrong No mathematician/scientist would write it like that. There are the rules BODMAS etc but most people would use brackets to clarify the order of calculation. Its like using proper punctuation in text, eg. A woman without her man is nothing. A woman: without her, man is nothing. H
Plum
I used to be able to work that out 30 odd years ago but children and chickens have addled my brain. I say ask a policeman.
bostock422
hahah, not heard of BODMAS in a while, my mental arithmetic has gone down the pan since high school, but my calculus has never been better

Alis girls
Are the brackets invisible? I am hopeless at maths - if there is a dyslexia in maths form I have it - mental maths - need fingers and a s"Ooops, word censored!" of paper. I would say 50 as logically i added the 2 5's and times by 5 - seemples - bit like me
Alis girls
Where are the MODS when u need them? Fred please dont post those simultanous thingies on here - I came on here to escape these conundrums. I can count and I got to 49 without being able to do maths. I have 2 hens, 2 cats, 2 sons and 1 hubbie - or is it 2 hubbies , 1 cat, - bother - never was anygood at numbers

ubereglu
Solve this: Now, that's a postively easy integral, compared to some of the maths A level things I've been doing of late...I actually now love maths, and slightly regret that I'm going off to do a Biology degree now! The answer is 7, as the integral of 3x^2 is just x^3, then you sort out the limits!
ubereglu
if there is a dyslexia in maths form I have it There is, its called Dyscalculia. Were you also listening to the Today Programme the other week too? However dyscalculia is just the fear of numbers, you can still be a really good mathematician even if you have it...after all higher forms of maths don't ever really deal with numbers...trust me!
