FoxFighters
Can you solve it? 5+5x5=................. Is it 50 or 30??? Holly
Geoid
BODMAS Brackets, Orders (powers and square roots), Division, Multiplication, Addition, Subtraction. 5X5 = 25 25+5 =
jimnpaula
30 you do the multiplication first, then the addition. If the addition is to be done first then it needs to be put in brackets ie: (5+5)x5 P

freddie
30 if you use BIDMAS. (Brackets, Indices, Division, Multiplication, Addition and Subtraction) 5x5,then+5=30. Edited May 30, 2011 by Guest

kerryegg
But if you used pieces of cake instead of just numbers would the answer be different?
Bramble
But if you used pieces of cake instead of just numbers would the answer be different? Yes, you wouldn't have any cake at all - it'd all be eaten

Sheilaz
Nah start at the start and end at the end 50 I'm completely with you Plum! Phew, I thought that too, I'm sure we did it that way. Perhaps we didn't have so many numbers, way back then (back in the day). PS. Surprisingly, ES thought 50 too, and also YD (who has a maths tutor starting from tomorrow! ), and we all thought there'd be some brackets on the 5 x 5 to make 30. I'm going to listen in on the tutoring.
WitchHazel
30. Multiplication and division first. It's only 50 if brackets are used like this: (5+5)*
Sheilaz
Yes, I meant to say, I can see the answer for the OP is 30, I just think maybe I was around before BODMAS was invented. Or I was listening to the top 30 on my transistor radio.

bluekarin
I feel as if I have stumbled into a parallel universe! which is excatly how I felt at the weekend when ED (in year 9) told me about it If you have to do it a specific way, why can't the sum just show that? It's like everyone is making it up and I always will get the answer wrong
Sam
Questions like this have been going around on facebook for a while now. I doubt people in the maths world would usually write them like that, it's just to catch people out. BIDMAS!
Ain't Nobody Here
I'd never ever heard of BODMAS till I had to go with a child to a maths class - makes me wonder how we managed back in the day .
