Nearly finished my PhD thesis!

Recommended Posts

Happy! :D but exhausted and now ready for a few days off :eh:

I've handed in a whole thesis to my supervisor to read (130-140 pages)

minus one or two minor bits

I've worked the entire bank holiday weekend, over 13 hours on Monday and the past few weekends

Now have to wait for supervisor to read :lol: 1) he's on half term and 2) takes 1-2 months most of the time

After that I submit officially, depending what my supervisor says and have a viva with 1 lecturer /academic from my department and someone from outside

They're usually 2 hours upwards, our lab record is 7  then you usually have minor corrections, and a few months to complete them.

Excellent! Glad to hear that it's a sensible length, too. Some folk in my old lab were writing 300-400 pages, which is just silly. Mine was 122 pages including diagrams, photos and references, and my viva was fine.

Hope your supervisor thinks it's great, and tells you that soon. :-)

Still have to see what supervisor says and maybe work on it before submitting. 2/3 results chapters have already been read, so hope the rest is OK :eh:

It's funny the only thesis that has gone into 2 volumes is a master's thesis :?

Well done Sarah 8)

Any thoughts on where your Post Doc is going to be :?

*ducks as sarah chucks something very heavy*

:lol::lol::lol:

Commutable from Sheffield.

Any ideas for careers involving animals and science (in a nice way)?

My only idea (apart from poultry farmer) is animal nutritionist, or testing poo samples :vom:

Not convinced by the academic route.

I have a few friends who are parastitologists sarah and he is very strange are you sure you want to spend life guddling around in animal poo

You don't have to go into academia places like VLA will have lab based jobs but not sure if there is one near Sheffield I will have a think

Not really :vom: in fact out of the lab and more office-based would probably be better :?

Thinking about industry (pharma?), patent law, technology transfer academia to industry, course administrator/admissions for postgrads.

Yeah: I think they decide to sit you near to anyone who has declared a medical condition....:lol::lol:

Funilly enough I once sat next to a Dr on a plane (no declared medical condition i might add):lol: and he told me he does not use his 'Dr' title outside of work as he does not want to be called into action when not working.

my mum works in a doctors surgery, she isnt a doctor, she's a practice manager (they do all of the work - well at her place anyway :? - dont know about any other docs) when ever she goes away and someone asks her about her job - she tells them and gets a million ailments to sort out  no one hears the "im not a doctor"
