I keep reading on here how people draw up nice benches to their WIRs, pop a cork and sit back, glass in hand, watching their chooks. If only

For one thing it always seems to rain when I have time off work . If it is sunny and I really do think like Lisa M in Cabaret 'Maybe this time I'll win' and this weekend I'll manage to read 'Perfect Poultry' with my chooks about me, I still seem to end up rushing about doing this that and the other for my OH or my old Mum. Even when I do sit down to watch my chickens I seem to end up doing gardeing. Am I doing something wrong? How do others manage to fit in chook watching, or is it all just a dream

Hi, we have a bench in front of the cube and sometimes will sit on it and watch them. Once we did have some elderflower wine and enjoyed it outside with them.... but we dont watch them as much as they watch us! they get on the bench (we sit on to watch them) and look through the window to the living room to see if were there. If they arent doing that they will be on the bush at the front kitchen window watching us have our tea - bit uncomfortable when we are having chicken korma! and if they arent doing that they will be knocking on the door with there beaks!! i wonder if thats just my hennies tho....

Our dining table looks out onto the garden so we watch while eating. Usually they watch us eat

I've got the garden seat, but not the time to sit and watch. Roll on retirement! (3 years to go).

I don't have enough time, but I do have a couple of garden chairs which I use to grab the odd minute of chookwatching. That's when the said chickens aren't sitting on them!

I have a chicken webcam...I can watch them everywhere - I sit in traffic watching them on my iPhone

sad I know but it's better than getting stressed about the traffic

And bouldercroft, that sounds like the most amazing iPhone app ever! I bet you could make a bit of money from it, from all of us at least

Mine are still in the house as there tiny still but i spend ages watching them , i come home from work and put the laptop on and sit there i also chill out reading on a cushin in the kitchen with them running about ( and trying to eat my garden mags )

I spend alot of my spare time in the garden so will be easy to keep an eye on them when they go out .

I can't let mine out unless I'm in the garden with them, and I'm always busy gardening when they are out ... I've never just sat and watched them. I do stop for a cuppa occasionally and enjoy watching their antics.

Not enough, but in the summer make a point of having 30 mins hen time (quite often turns out to be longer) when we get home from work. This normally involves a g&t for us and treats for the hen. It's a good chance to check them over as well. Like the hen cam idea though!

like everyone, not enough, but I do like to perch on the deck (which the cube sits on) and watch them while they are in their electric fence and I'm outside. the chair in the WIR is really only used if I need to get hold of someone and do something to them. the chooks, of course, use it more than I do!

I can't sit and watch mine when they are in their WIR as they just pace up and down wanting to be let out.

 

We've not long had some newbies so when we let them all out to free range one of us has to sit out and watch them in case of bullying, so that's a nice excuse to get some chook watching time in. Though for me its generally with a fleece and a cup of coffee rather than a glass of wine.

DH is about to lay a patio next to the WIR, it already has 2 chairs and a table (made of an upturned flower pot and a slab on top) on it, there's also an old chair in the run which they sit on more than I do! I'd love a chook cam so I can see what theyre up to whilst I'm at work

I get to watch my hens each time i'm sat at the computer as my desk over looks the garden and the coop Not very good for getting on with my work though!

My WIR is only a couple of feet from my kitchen window and I can see the whole of my (tiny) garden from there so watching the girls makes cooking/washing dishes much more bearable .

 

Trouble is, if they spot me they jump up onto the high perches and stare at me as if they're saying "forget those two-leggers, how about our tea ?" .

I can see mine out of the kitchen window, so it makes washing up much more enjoyable than it used to be! I make a lot more time to sit on a rug in the garden with the kids now so I can watch them, I also peek out the girls bedroom window every night when I put them to bed

I like the idea of those webcams As it is I think I need to do some re-arranging in the house to get more of my daily acitivities (working at the compuster, wasing up, eating lunch / supper / breakfast) so that they actually overlook the chooks otherwise I can see I'm missing out

I'm watching my chooks with a +5hr time difference (I'm in the UK at the moment) and I'm amazed to see how early they wake up!
