Fly repellent (not baited type) recommendations please

Recommended Posts

I have a very small garden, so can not use the baited type of fly traps that are very affective in larger gardens (in mine they just attract more flies!)

So I am after recommendations for effective fly REPELLENTS.

I have seen ones in my local feed shop that are used for horses, but they couldn't tell me if they were safe for poultry. One brand was aptly named "Naff Off!"

I am looking for something to use in a small garden and more importantly inside the chicken coop.

Any suggestions would be very gratefully received.

regards

Ade

I bought one of those plastic bag fly traps. Its been up about 3 weeks and has 1 fly in it... on the instructions it says it catches thousands.... so that was a waste of £10!

I will try the tea tree oil on the chippings... just to check, its not poisonous for the hens is it? And how much do you use?

Well my experience of the (Red Top) fly trap bag was not good... don't get me wrong, it worked AMAZINGLY at attracting every fly in the neighbourhood.. but that's not something you want in a very small garden! You need at least a 100ft garden with these, so you can get them far enough away from where you don't want the files. We had to get rid of it after a couple of weeks, as it was creating more of a problem than we first had! LOL

I will let you know how I get on with the magic trees, I've ordered 5 from ebay for under a fiver :D

Almost glad it didnt work now! Yeah let me know how you get on with the air fresheners... mind you there something very eery about hanging air fresheners in your run... have you ever seen the films seven and silence of the lambs... both used air fresheners.... to hide the smell of dead bodies... dont want the neighbours thinking I have murdered someone and put them under the wood chippings! lol

I go for the romantic look :D:D

Lovely stained glass lantern with citronella candles, up high so chooks cant reach candle lasts about 4 hours.

Now Margaret, dont let my wife be reading this, she is into smelly candles and pretty candle holders... we will have the chicken house and run looking similar to the inside of our house!

Every room I go in there has to be twinkly candles, lights and aromatherapy oils burning!

I filled my fly repellant holder with citronella oil in it this time, instead of the stinky stuff it had last year.

I too have a small garden so the 'smell' is never far away.

I'm not sure if the citronella has worked or whether it has been too cold for the flies or if it's because they get fed Garvo, but I'm willing to try anything.
