Finally got a broody! ... with chick

Recommended Posts

After waiting all year, I finally have a broody

Esmerelda, my Welsummer bantam, was sat in the cube nest box on some eggs. I hoiked her out + put her in a rabbit hutch with a couple more eggs to make it up to 6 and she's sat tight on them.

They're on day 3 atm so still early stages. Will candle them in a few days and see how they're going - hopefully Quigley has done the deed and we'll get a couple chicks :D

I've just got through my first time of hatching with a broody hen. It was very easy I thought though my hatch rates were not great.

They hatched yesterday and were out in the sunshine on the grass with their mother-hen today. :) It's great.

Hope it all goes well for you.

I much prefer using a broody :D ... although planning to use an incy in a few weeks aswell

Cilla the silkie has decided it might be a good idea to go broody too so she's sat in the Cube nest box atm. Will see what she's like tomorrow and might move her to a hutch/the eglu and give her a couple eggs :D

How exciting! I have put some eggs in the inci at the same time as yours so they should be hatching at the same time! I agree about using a broody hen, she does all the hard work for you and its so lovely to see the mum with her babies. Nature is quite amazing. What are you planning to hatch? (apart from chicks obviously!)

My Pekin (Caramel) is back on eggs again, only 8-9 weeks after her first hatching at Easter . This time she's having a go at some LF chicks, so it will be fun seeing the chicks get bigger then she is within a very short space of time . She did a grand job with her own eggs last time round (5/5), so we're  for equal success this time too. The chicks, if they hatch at the weekend, are for friends in the village, so won't be staying with us for long.

The eggs will be Quigley crosses :D

Q is a Lav Frizzle Pekin, then the girls are Silkie, Pekin and Barred Wyandotte ... what the chicks will look like? Your guess is as good as mine ;)

Cilla stayed on her eggs so was moved the the eglu ... then the next day Eliza, the Barred 'Dotte, went broody in the cube! I left her there to see if she stayed and she's still there a week later.

Got back yesterday and she was on 14 LF eggs  Have taken 11 out and left her with 3.

I candled the eggs (day 10) last night and Esmerelda has 1 developer, Cilla has 2 so have put the 3 developers under Esmerelda, who seems a better broody.

Its a bit awkward setting more eggs under the other 2 'cos I'm on holiday in a few weeks (when the chicks would hatch) so I might leave it a week before giving her any eggs, so they hatch when I'm back :P

Well, Caramel managed to hatch 4 of the 6 eggs she's been sat on this time round :). The first out didn't make it through the first 24hrs, I think it must have hatched in the black of night, wandered away from Mum, got lost (or Mum didn't realise it had wandered off), got cold, and that was the end of it. However, the other three are thriving :D. Caramel still has two eggs under her, but I think they are duds, so will remove them tonight if nothing has hatched today (a little shake of both this morning makes me think they each have a chick inside, but they didn't make it to maturity).

Here's a picture of Mum and her three chicks.

Hi, very cute chick! Hope the others hatch ok. Mine are due tomorrow, i have 5 out of 6 fertile which is good going for ebay eggs! Not sure if they all will hatch will have to wait and see! I wish i was using a broody like you, this is my first time without one and i think it must be so much easier and nicer for the chicks to have a "mum" to look after them. Will let you know when/if i get some chicks! :)

Well Esmerelda's other 2 eggs were fully formed but didn't make it - she was getting bored of sitting on them while her chick was running away!

My cousin looked after everyone while we were in Mexico so she named the chick Britney S Pears :lol:

(S)He's doing well, 3 weeks old - flat and not a frizzle!

Cilla was sat on 4 eggs too and I got some excited texts on Thursday

Quinn, Santana and Mercedes ;)

They're all been FRing today, bit like a jungle!

Mabel is still sat broody in the cube! Tempted to let her hatch but they'd only be a few weeks old and then I'd be back at Uni so might be sensible

(hatch)(hatch)(hatch)

Wow they are beautiful! Sooooo cute!

All I've ever hatched are lizards, although they were extremely sweet too (they used to scuttle up my arm and sit on my shoulder :P ) and unlike bird eggs one turn and they're dead! I got 20 out of 21 hatched last time - it's amazing how different they are to birds :D:D:D!eggwhite!!eggwhite!!eggwhite!

18 more in the incubator now (very small omlette anyone? )

I think It's probably better to use a broody than an incubator - I wouldn't Know, though - I have to use a bator for the reptiles. (apart from the need for humidity, my lot would probably eat them or something  )

Your chicks are so sweet!!!

Got some photos with the proper camera earlier:

Britney - 4 weeks, looking like actually a Boris but no way as red as Quiggley was at 3 weeks

Hope she is a Britney! :D

My cousin who named them + looked after them while we were away has fallen in love with them and came back to see them tonight. "They're huge!!"

Theres a cute little 7 week old Black Pekin girl at work who I have my eyes on and have been told I can have.

May do an intro when Esmerelda gets bored of Britney ... just so that Britney has a friend you understand ;)
