Best liner/ bedding for drop tray

It was a colleague's thirtieth birthday, and so we thought it would be a nice surprise to order a scottie dog cake from here http://www.theoriginalhatboxcakecompany.co.uk/ It wasn't cheap at almost £27 but we were looking forward to her opening it, and so we were very disappointed to find that actually the cake was nothing like the one pictured on the web site just a small and very boring lemon butter iced sponge cake, and apparently, when we complained that was our fault because we'd ordered Lemon sponge, instead of vanilla which would have been decorated to match the hat box!!!! Nowhere on the web site was that pointed out to us, and we can now only get a refund if we return the original cake..which since it was presented as a pressie can't be done..... Really, I'm all for people setting up their own businesses, but clearly there is no customer care here, and personally I would avoid buying anything else from them...even though they use eggs from happy hens ....

I am confused. If you order the Scottie dog one you get three choices and surely they are all Scottie dog cakes Bit daft asking you to return the cake. It will be stale and they can't do anything with it other than throw it away

I've just had a look as well, and too can't see anything relating to having to have a certain flavour cake in order to get the decoration shown Can you take a photo of the cake your friend received and maybe send it to them with a copy (if poss) of the one on their website?

I don't think I'd accept that - £27 for a sponge cake? I'd complain loudly and mention Trading Standards, in fact why not ring your local TS for advice.

I think their website is totally misleading - surely the Scottie Dog Iced Cake should look like the photo, regardless of the flavour . If not, they should make that clear.

 

I would complain again pointing that out in no uncertain terms . At £27 you deserve more than you got .

Thanks to all of you for confirming (a la Susan Ma) that I'm not stupid after all ....We have had some e-mail exchanges with the company, and apparently the cake we received and the service we received wasn't really that different from the one that they advertised

 

We are going to forward our e-mail correspondence to Trading Standards, just so that other people are not similarly mislead if nothing else, hence my posting, I wouldn't want anyone else to feel similarly disappointed .....

I would also say go direct to trading standards... I've seen the website and there is no mention of picking particular types of sponges to the decoration - that shouldn't make a difference at all! In fact it states that:

 

Decorated to compliment the hat box of your choice tell us what you would like piped on top to make this a fab gift.

 

 

So I think you would expect scottie dogs as decorations on the cake and they can't quibble about that!

They are covering up their boo-boo and should be ashamed of themselves

Completely agree. Anyone ordering would assume that it was as you expected. The drop down menu of choosing which type of sponge doesn't suggest that the product design would change. If you've received a plain one, that's totally misleading, I agree with you and the others.

no no no - it says decorated to match the box, implying it would look as the picture with blue/pink doggies on!

I would still go further - as lemon cake is a totally different product

I used this company to send a cake to my MIL for her birthday some years ago. Very disappointed as it was just as you said, nothing like the photo on the website. They were less than helpful when I complained too.

What a load of rubbish, if there were no Scottie dogs on the cake you received, then it's totally different to the one they advertised! They include a picture of cake with dogs on and state that it will be decorated to match the box. I really don't see how they can wriggle out of that one!

 

Oh and I would also suggest that the service you received was not as advertised earlier... it was much, much worse!

Not surprised you're miffed! As well as Trading standards I think you should also put a review up on the web. If you google the company name and review you're bound to find some sites where you can leave a review - warn other prospective customers.

How can they call it a "scottie dog cake" when it doesn't have scottie dogs on it? There is nothing in the choice of sponge flavouring options to indicate that this in any way impacts on the design you receive.

It states quite clearly that the cake matches the hatbox.

Contact trading standards. Also, did you pay buy CC? You may be able to get some sort of cover via them.

 

Their stance is untenable and I look forward to TS contacting them.
