Sammiboo
Last week i decided to join a gym. I have been considering this for some time. I really hate gyms, i find going to them a chore so took me months to justify paying £600 I have a desk job and work long hours and when i come home i just want to chill out and dont have the motivation to get out. So i decided to join a gym near work so i go straight after work and not having the problem of getting home and trying to get myself out again. I have joined Bannatyne's in shrewsbury - i live near welshpool so its a 20 mile drive so thought it was better to do it that way. I am currently enjoying going, i love swimming so that was the big draw. I still hate the gym but the built in TVs help a bit to pass the time. The point of thread is I have only been a member just over a week and wondered if anyone has any tips on getting motivated (as i am sure my enthusiasm will be short lived) and has anyone really benefitted from going? Chucky Mama
I have never joined a gym and have to say that everyone that I know that has joined one has given up after a few months and spent the rest of the time feeling guilty. I would suggest that you get someone in the gym to set up a programme for you to stick to. If I was doing it I would go at the beginning of the day rather than the end. There are less excuses not to go at the beginning of the day and early morning exercise really does set you up for the day. Good luck
Leicester_H
Hi I found it helped to get into a routine (but don't be a fanatic about keeping to it). I used to go in a long lunch hour Mon, Wed, Fri. I calculated I needed to go twice a week to get value for money, so didn't feel guilty if I missed one, but aimed for 3. Then build you week around your gym sessions where possible. The Dogmother
I've always been an avid gym go-er, but then I used to be a part time personal trainer! As Chucky Mama has said, I'd suggest that you get a fitness programme drawn up and reviewed regularly to keep you interested. Good luck and have fun. Ain't Nobody Here
Do they do any classes like zumba or bodystep? If you find one you like (even a little bit ), you may be more motivated to go if you have an actual time you have to be there. Also someone shouting at you do to stuff kinda makes you do it . I started going to the gym a bit as well as my step/zumba classes but couldn't keep it up due to lack of motivation (and it was boring!). I stick to the classes now . Find a friend to go with - that always helps (as long as you egg each other on to go ).
Tutti Frutti
I used to go but didn't renew our membership when we moved and am now half a stone heavier Yep, get a programme and review it every 6 weeks. Also, join classes - circuits and zumba are fun and you'll get to meet people and have a laugh so it becomes more social than a chore. Sammiboo
thanks for your replies chucky Mama - i am aiming to go some mornings but i would need to be there for 6.30-7.00 which means i would need to leave the house 45mins before and would need to get myself out of bed at least an hour before that! I need an excuse to leave work on time, as i am doing silly hours for no extra pay Hazel - i aim to go as many times as i can, i am hoping it wont fade out, i really enjoy swimming and dont find it a chore so at least if i can manage that as a minimum it wont be so bad. ANH - I plan to start aqua aeobics next week, i like the look of 'step up' as i like doing it on the wii. my friend has been going to this gym for the last 4 yrs but she hardly goes, i want to build up my stamina so i can do high impact classes. Thanks again for all your replies
..lay a little egg for me
Ha, good you asked about gym "goers" rather than gym "members" as the latter group is considerably bigger than the former I am a member and like you chose a gym close to where I have to travel anyway, which in my case is on the school run. This means that during the school holidays I rarely manage to summon the enthusiasm to go, but I have to say I do manage to go two or three times a week during school terms, which is better than nothing I guess . The Dogmother
A training partner always helps too - then you have company to help you train and feel guilty about letting them down if you wimp off. I do circuit training every Monday evening and my partner is an old friend, ex rugby player, built like Mike Tindall. We both egg each other on if we're flagging.
