Willow
I applied for my replacement car tax disc on-line in good time and realised it hadn't turned up at the start of the month so I rang and they confirmed it was all applied and paid for and said they would send me a new one. I pointed out that if the first had got lost in the post that as sender they needed to report it to the post office I couldn't as the recepient. They refused to consider reporting It's now got to the end of this week and still no sign of either tax disc I'm at a loss now, I can no longer go to a post office apparently - I have to go to the local dvla office which is miles away and nowhere near where I'm working. And of course I've already paid once... I am so cross with their attitude
patsylabrador
Because it is all done online, there will be a computer record that your vehicle is taxed, although it is an offence not to display one, the main offence is not paying for it. If you get stopped and explain the situation, the police would do a PNC check and confirm that you have car tax. Keep any correspondence that you have had with DVLA with you. It's not perfect but as long as you have paid for you car tax, I wouldn't lose any sleep.
WitchHazel
How annoying! It seems really odd that it could go astray twice. Do they definitely have the correct address and postcode? Maybe it takes a few days to get printed, enveloped, and sent. Give them a call on Monday if it hasn't turned up.
Ain't Nobody Here
I once bought my tax disc quite early, completely forgot to put it in when the date came round and only realised when I got a ticket more than 6 months later . Because I could prove I'd paid for it, it was OK. So I agree, don't worry about driving about without one .
Geoid
If you have the confirmation e-mail, print that off and leave it in the car, just in case you do get stopped. Edited August 6, 2011 by Guest
CatieB
Just a thought but do you have your usual postman? Everytime ours goes on holiday our post goes odd, including things being at the sorting office despite the fact I haven't been left a card. I have also had other peoples post. Would it be worth asking neighbours and the sorting office?

I have checked the address with them several times. I don't know if we have a different postman at the moment (possible as it's holiday time) but our neighbours are very good at popping post in if it goes to the wrong house (sometimes I've realised the postman can do several houses one door number out )
abwsco
Patricia it could be worthwhile contacting the sorting office as other post could be going missing. There was a post man in our area not delivering the mail a few years ago and it was only by people reporting missing mail that they found out. Also, I do know someone who was fined for not displaying a tax disc and it was only a few days out. Car parked outside house and tax disc inside I think it must depend on the policeman. Willow
one point they know come in a plain white envolope which has cought me out a couple of times I've put them on the mantle in plain sight I did wonder of I could have not noticed the first one but I've been through all the post and once I'd rung and asked for a second I checked everything that came through the door
Jennifer Jane
I usually apply online. Did so a couple of years ago and mine didn't turn up after a week. When I rang I was told they had been on strike so there were lots of delays, but they would send out another. I checked with the police and they told me that it was an offence not to display, and while it would be harsh to penalise me, it would depend upon the police officer who noticed it and how strictly they enforced it. (It has changed now, I understand). So, just in case, I didn't drive my car for a week. Then 2 tax discs turned up...
Willow
So, just in case, I didn't drive my car for a week. Unfortunately we cannot manage without using the car next week, OH will be at another office and stopping overnight on Mon and neither the office nor the plpace he is staying are anywhere need a train/bus route. I'll be in the office on Monday which will take me 8 separate trains and a reasonable walk to get there and back since OH will have the car So if he hadn't been using the car I would have done. We've had loads of things going missing in the post recently
