Jobs for Teens

Recommended Posts

That's great news Sarah, I hope that she enjoys it.

Rosie (13) has spent the summer hols working at a friend's livery yard or helping a friend to look after her two small children - I would recommend child minding as the world's best contraceptive; every teen should do it. She's been getting £4/hour, just this morning another friend asked if she'd be able to babysit for them on the odd weekend; so long as she's done all her homework, it's not on a school night and they walk her back by 10.30pm I am OK with that - she'll be getting £5/hour for this and is absolutely delighted.

Time for a trip to Reading methinks...

Well done to Cleo. I am sure that she will really enjoy it.

I haven't encouraged Jamie to look for a job since college started. He is doing 5 subjects and is working really hard on those.

I have offered some incentives if he tutors YD in maths! He did some work experience at an accountants during the half term break and really enjoyed that so all is not lost!

We got Spinach - ED - a job at a local hotel chambermaiding at age 15, after she had done her school work experience week there and a few weeks of volunteering after (also down to OH). We insisted she stick at it but job came through quite quickly. She progressed to waitressing and kept the job through college, so when she went away to Uni she got a job at the same hotel chain, who trained her in waitressing and sommelier work. That led to ski chalet hostessing and is how she met her partner, who is Dutch, and she lives in Europe and loves it.

Gammon - YD - is ten years younger, and now 15 herself. She volunteers in a local cafe each Saturday morning and does anything from washing up to serving to making soup/starters. It is hard work but I think volunteering is a key stage in the process and it is teaching her about how the world of work works. Sadly ALL of her friends have laughed when they heard she was volunteering and said they would not work without getting paid. She fibs now and says she is getting paid to save face, so we pay her for each shift.

YS and friend hit the shops in the next town to us yesterday with updated CV's which one of their teachers had very kindly helped them with during the day. He told me they got a very positive response but we will have to see if he gets any phone calls  It will also mean him getting up in time to get a train if any job offers appear :!:

Quick update.

Cleo is loving her job at Oil & Vinegar & they seem to really like her there too, which is nice :P

However,it ends in January as it is only a short term lease................

BUT,she was in Lush earlier & got chatting to the manager and.......................she offered her a job on the spot!

So,she is handing in her notice today & starting next week on a permanent basis,at a great shop where they won't go  at her hair or piercings.

We are all very, very happy :P:P:P

So hard to find anything, can sympathise completely.

Sons girlfriend one went all round our local large town all the usual major retailers and there was nothing. Went round again nothing at all. Seems word of mouth ie via grapevine. Fortunately my son was giving up his pub job waiting on tables and doing a spot of bar work and she took this. Our local pub is inundated with youngsters asking for work but their trade has dropped off and its an excellent popular pub.

I got the job for the other youngster, I asked in our local butcher as I knew the other lad was leaving and they started not long ago. Some school friends have done lifeguard courses to get jobs at swimming pools etc.

I would try some of the local businesses even if they need help for a few hours, pubs, bars etc. Tell him to go in face to face and ask and not to be dejected and leave his name and number on a piece of paper.

Try NHS jobs too this is where my eldest son has a right menial job but its a job (no career) but he knows he is lucky to have a job. No chance of ever getting a mortgage and the promises of courses have never happened..and he is at the age where he could go for free still!

A real struggle for youngsters who want to work. I did paper round in morning, washed cars 50p, helped the milkman, stables, washed up in wine bar.

Lifeguarding is an excellent job, they are also in short supply. So short in fact, I now lifeguard at 3 pools.

After spending time handing out CVs to local cafes and shops and applying for advertised jobs in supermarkets, I finally got a job a couple of weeks a go in a local pet supply shop (which I'm really enjoying, though I keep wanting to buy all the chicken treats ).

This job was mostly due to timing. My Dad was in the shop earlier that day, and the woman on the till was complaining because her Saturday girl hadn't turned up. He asked if she was looking for a new Saturday girl, and she said not officially. I took my CV in later just in case, and I told to and it to the owner of the shop. He looked through my CV, asked me a few questions and gave me the job on the spot, starting the next week. It turns out he had come in on his only day off because the other girl hadn't appeared! (and was not that happy about it)

Two weeks on she still hasn't contacted the owner or turned up for work so I don't feel to bad about stealing her job :P

As mentioned before YS is juggling two jobs in cafe and hotel and has been asked to fill in extra hours in the lead up to Christmas. He met a friend of mine while out delivering food from the cafe and was telling her of all the coming and going and how very, very hard he was working  She told him his life sounded like something out of a Dickens story :lol:
