urgent help please, deformed chick happy update

Recommended Posts

Hi, my last chick has just hatched and it looks as if it may have been a double yolker as it seems to have a blob attached to its rear end. it is about the size of a very small egg. What do i do, should i open the inci and try to remove it or will it bleed to death? Hoping to god i dont have to dispatch it, if i do what is the best way? Please help i cant let it suffer. :( Just had a better look and it looks like the blob is an unformed chick as it looks quite bloody if that makes sense.

Just tried putting the chick in with beryl and she seemed to reject it, getting very aggitated as it was chirping so much. Am not sure about it as it seems to have very long legs and struggles to stand. It has also been in the inci since 9.30 am ans still looks wet. Should i dispatch? I feel so awful but i dont want to put it back with the broody and her kill it.

put it back in the inccy and hope it dries out and fluffs up, unless there are any innards on the outside the lump should just dry out and drop off (like a baby's unbilical cord)

If the little thing looks stronger tomorrow then I'd pop it under her tomorrow night and closely supervise when you let the light in the coop on Sunday

Chicks can cope for a couple of days with no food or water but if you are very worried about it dip the tip of its beak in some warm water tomorrow and let it drink a little but do not open the inccy if the other egg has pipped

Thanks guys, i am giving it until tomorrow as tasha said, i really fear the worst as its little legs look so weird and too long it just cant stand up. So sad but i guess thats what can happen with them. I have to be positive and focus on the healthy chicks that i have and what a great mum Beryl is to her brood. Will let you know the outcome, i am dreading tomorrow. :(

Good news! Well i gave" Little voice" friday night and took it out sat morning. After a couple of very tense attemps Beryl accepted the wee little thing. I had to give it a gentle rub all over as i think its feathers were covered in mucus or something and it still looked wet which is why Beryl was pecking it. I have to thank Redwing for encouraging me to give it time as i think i would have dispatched it if it wasnt for her wise words. The reason i call it "Little voice" is while it was in the inci it was chirping so loudly and even now with the others it still makes the most noise! I know it sounds daft but i really think this one wanted to live! I will post some pics later so you can see it. I have to add that if there was a prize for broody of the year then dear Beryl would be a winner! She has accepted a total of 8 chicks from the inci and hatched one herself. What a star. I think it makes all the difference having a broody to rear these chicks, especially the ones that arent so strong. You cant beat a mothers love! :) Fingers crossed for "Little voice"...
