craftyhunnypie
Someone over the fields in the valley had quite a spectacular display, we couldn't hear them though. Another person across the stream had a couple of those quiet fountain ones that stay on the floor. A nice quiet evening. We had our bonfire with mulled wine, toasted marshmallows, chilli & jackets & chocolate cheesecake. The guy soon burnt & we had a great night. whoopsie
We're not firework fans in this house - i've seen (and heard) too many burned children and OH think's he's back in Iraq and gets quite upset. There are still a few stray ones going off but hopefully they'll stop soon. I wonder how many people realise we are celebrating terrorism (albeit a thwarted attempt). The Dogmother
We have a superb local firework display which only costs £3 to see. Despite this we still get neighbours letting off very loud fireworks nearby, especially the ones next-door-but-one; for goodness sakes, we've had enough discussions about how bad Ruby is on firework night.... they have even commented on her howling. She's always been bad with them, despite tranquillisers, a thunder coat and lots of cuddles. The only thing which helps is loud music but she still hears the very loud/close ones. redhotchick
I think that the use of fireworks needs to be more tightly controlled. There will always be people who want to use them for Weddings, New Year and other celebrations. Maybe a fee for a one day licence for people who want to use them privately, and they have to advertise that they will be using fireworks? The fee could be on a sliding scale with a minimum amout of say £50 depending on the quantity of fireworks, and how loud they are! When it comes to Bonfire night I think the emphasis should be on organised displays. It was ridiculous here on Bonfire night. A constant stream of bangs, whooshes and flashes for hours on end. The Dogmother
Great idea I think that we have less 'casual fireworks' this year, perhaps due to the cost. There are so many organised displays locally that there is always going to be one to choose from.

You could have a fireworks permissions list in the local paper, so you can prepare yourself for it.
Cinnamon
That would work provided they had to show the licence before they were able to buy the fireworks,or it would be open to abuse.
redhotchick
That would work provided they had to show the licence before they were able to buy the fireworks,or it would be open to abuse. They'd have a unique secure code that was connected to a database, or a piece of paper where purchases had to be recorded. They would have to give the number/piece of paper in each time they bought fireworks and would be charged according to how much was purchased. Alternatively...Fireworks could be highly taxed! and have a nominal user licence fee to enable advertising of the use of fireworks on a given day! I'd like to see people give as much to charity as they spend on fireworks. I've seen more fireworks than poppies this week!
