Leicester_H
As a scientist, I'm perplexed as to how the 'shake & vac' type products work to remove 'deep down dirt' from carpets, as promised in the adverts. But if they didn't, I assume they would have dissapeared from the shops by now. Has anyone used anything like this and found it worked well ? If so, which product ? Thanks, H
Cinnamon
I guess they must have some sort of absorbency to them,to soak up dirt & greasy stuff? A bit like dry hair shampoo - they smell too overpoweringly floral for my liking,so tend not to use them though.
Charlottechicken
I honestly didn't know you could still buy that type of product
Ain't Nobody Here
I think it's because you can't know for sure that the "deep down dirt" has actually disappeared so people just believe the hype and assume that the product works. That's my theory anyway .
poachedegg
Every now and again, I sprinkle bicarb of soda onto our rugs (no carpets downstairs), leave overnight and then hoover, but wouldn't use maufactured powders - but then I use bicarb for everything! HarrisonFamily
Never used them but now can't stop singing the old advert lyrics.... "do the shake and vac and put the freshness back...."
little cluckers
I've used Shake n Vac on a couple of occasions but mainly to hide/eliminate smells ie when the kids were younger and couldn't get to the loo in time when they had a bug and vomited on the carpet. (they seemed to work!) I just assumed as Cinnamon says that they have an absorbent aspect to them?
Lavenders_Blue
I use Bissell Rug Foam on carpet stains - you work the foam into the carpet and then hoover out when dry. To be honest, I don't know how it works (I'm not a scientist!) but it does seem to, it has removed several stains from my carpet. Maybe it doesn't get the deep down stains out, but makes the top layers look clean? (Which is good enough for me in between periodic carpet shampooings)
Looney
I'm never quite convinced by shake and vac but then I've only used it once years ago. It certainly smelled really strong! I have used bicarb too on many an occasion.
kazmac
When I used shake 'n' vac neither the 'deep down dirt' nor the shake 'n' vac came out of the carpet!! Maybe I had a rubbish hoover!
chickencam
I think they just mask smells rather than actually doing anything useful. I swear by my Dyson, 1001 spray for spot cleaning and a once yearly go over the house with a Rug Doctor. We have pale carpets throughout our downstairs, they have been down for 10 years and are still looking pretty good, despite 3 children and 2 dark cats. WitchHazel
Wasn't there a bit of a hoo-hah about these products some years ago? Now they have to be marketed as carpet fresheners rather than cleaners, as all they do is scent the carpet. I'm thinking of shake and vac particularly, not the spot cleaners. Strong advertising though, I can still sing and dance the S&V song. I did it often enough as a kid, from about 8 years old one of my (many, many) household chores was vacuuming. The house used to stink of S&V.
