Alis girls
ES is severely allergic to 4 nuts - not peanuts suprisingly - cashews, pistachios, walnuts and brazils. he is now getting every so often a problem with fruits. When i say problem its a funny feeling on tongue and lips - quick antihistamine and it seem to sort it. Last time it was an apricot when we were in Spain - today an apple. Could it be a preservative? It is a worry as in a few yrs he'll prob be at uni. The allergy clinic dont want to "challenge" the allergy till hes 21 - I want to do another challenge when hes 18 before uni. - I dont really understand the reaction to fruit. despite being a nurse this is not my expertise. Anyone have experience of allergies either with kids etc. I am going to ring Allergy Uk and get advice but thought I'd come here first - font of all knowledge. HappyhenSG
I'm not an allergy expert but my sister has recently been diagnosed with a salicylate intolerance. Salicylates occur in literally dozens of foods, including those you've mentioned. See this link for more information: http://www.allergyuk.org/fs_salicylate.aspx My mum, in recent years, has also developed a problem with apples. Whether organic or not, washed, peeled or not. Her mouth itches and swells. She does seem to be able to eat cooked apples though. Hope this helps. Christian
Look up oral allergy syndrome Mine started when I was 10 (just a few years ago) with apples. Some nuts especially hazel nuts, but fruit is the worst. Apples, kiwi, pears, cherries, etc are the worst. I just avoid them now. I thought it was the chemicals, but tried all sorts, including organic. Cooked fruit is fine, but I would love to bite into an apple Edited November 13, 2011 by Guest
Goosey Lucy
I was just about to post a link to the same website as HappyhenSG. I sometimes have Hayfever but over the past 5 years or so I've had to stop eating raw apples as the itching in my mouth is unbearable. Hazelnuts also cause me problems. Like Christian I blamed pesticides but now I'm not so sure. I found the page about Oral Allergy Syndrome most useful. I shall be getting myself tested if I can. Hope your son's symptoms improve x
Snowy
My son has the same thing! He only started with hayfever at 16 - he gets it early in the season so we have deduced it is tree pollen (mine is later and is grass related). He then developed the tingling tongue and lips to apples, and then cherries. No problems if they are cooked. I was lead to believe the hayfever and apple allergy were linked but have never investigated it further. It's interesting to see how many others are affected
Chicken deficient
Gosh, I'm wondering now if that is what is going on with my little boy. Recently, every now and then, he starts acting like he's got a bit of fluff or something on his tongue - but there has been nothing there when I've looked. I'll have to see if it is after eating anything in particular.
Olly
I also suffer from oral allergy syndrome, it's linked to birch pollen hayfever. The only fruits I can eat are ones that you peel like bananas or citrus fruit - cooked fruit is ok, but I also have a problem with hazelnuts, brazil nuts and others. That would be my first guess - it makes my tongue/lips and throat tingle and itch, but it does wear off fairly quickly.
chickencam
This is interesting, I hope you get to the bottom of it. I will keep an eye on my ED she has early season hayfever and used to love apples but is not keen anymore I am wondering if they make her mouth feel odd, she complained about tasting blood yesterday. I have a reaction to my homemade blackcurrant jam this year it makes my lips and tounge tingle anyone else had this? it has happened with a few things recently I will note it if it happens again. Apricots I can understand because they are part of the almond family I think.
snowberry
I can't eat any fruit or vegetable raw, but can if they are cooked or previously canned...like you I get intense itching in my mouth, throat, my lips swell up & I even get itching in my ears My breathing usually becomes an issue after nuts or bananas; neither of which I ever touch! Funnily enough I can eat blueberries but the doctors were baffled by lettuce setting me off. All my children are allergic to nuts. Eldest was sent to Plymouth at christmas for a peanut challenge. Firstly they do a skin prick test. Unfortunately they decided that his reaction to that was so bad that they refused him a challenge
Alis girls
Thanks so much - and for the links Christian and Happy hen - sounds like what my son has. I have never heard of this and may ask GP's advice - I would bet my bottom dollar GP wont have heard of it either. Its exactly as you all describe. I wondered with the apricot if it was because there is an almond shaped nut in stone if broken open but hat doesnt explain apples does it? Thanks again - he is fine with cooked apples - weird isnt it
Christian
I think the best thing is to avoid the foods that set you off (obvious I know) Mine is birch pollen related I think. Although some of the foods on the list set me off.some don't. I had a salad recently, that contained raw apple - I realised in about 3 seconds and had to spit it out. Luckily I was at work and had my toothbrush and toothpaste with me. The reaction is almost immediate. Tingling lips that start to swell, itchy throat (and sometimes ears) and my throat feels like it is swelling up. I have never been tested, just avoid apples mainly. Blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, bananas, melon, mango, coconut etc are all fine, so I stick to those. I'm fine with raw carrots and tomatoes. Most nuts are fine apart from Hazelnuts. Apples, plums, cherries, figs, kiwi, pears, peaches, nectarines are the ones that trigger mine. It is really uncomfortable but liveable. My Mum keeps nagging me to get a test done and get an epipen, but I know what to avoid now. It sounds like your ES has a birch pollen allergy. Best to get his checked to see how bad it is. Good luck. Edit - crossed posted Ali.
Guest
Well how strange.... I too have HAyfever - early on and mid summer...... But have notice some things make my ears itch like crazy - but i'd never really linked it to any food! I shall take note in future when it happens! x
snowberry
The docs took 2 lots of blood from me & still ran out before they got to the bottom of the 'suspect' list On the Alleryg UK list it's interesting to see that avocado isn't on it! Snowy
I think you are right that GPs won't have heard of this - my GP was clueless when I first took my son in to be tested because of his reaction to apples. I have learnt more since then (and even more today!) Sadly there are very few real allergy specialists out there - I sometimes have to get people at work tested regarding industrial allergens and at the moment I only know of one chap in Birmingham who can do the type of intensive testing that we require. First stop would probably be getting your GP to refer to the local NHS for initial tests, and take it further if that is unproductive. I must admit, we haven't bothered. Son just avoids things he knows to be a problem and carried antihistamines with him.
whoopsie
This is an excellent thread, thank you for posting it. Now can anyone explain my developing an allergy to tea? I used to drink it all day long but have now not touched it for four years. It started with me getting 'digestive' symptoms - we thought I was pregnant at first, and the GP ruled out ovarian cancer - but now I only have to take a tiny sip and I feel very ill indeed. It's not tannins or caffeine, I can have herbal tea and jasmine tea, but anything else is a no-no.

Groovychook
I have oral allergy syndrome too. Lots of fruits make my mouth & throat and ears itch and feel sore; Tomatoes, kiwi, melon, pineapple, avocado, banana, strawberries to name but a few. All of these things seem to have a more severe affect the riper they are- avocado especially. Pineapple also makes my lips swell and tomatoes on occasion can burn the skin on my hands quite badly if I chop them when they are very ripe I also can't chop or cook raw chilli as the vapour literally takes my breath away and I have an instant asthma attack. I was told during a pre assessment for an operation, that this meant I was allergic to latex. I still eat all the above things because I like them!! For a long time, I thought it was just normal to feel uncomfortable after eating certain foods I too suffer from hayfever- it's all related. squiffs
I have oral allergy syndrome, and it gets set off mostly by certain 'exotic' nuts, and dried fruits. Which is a damn shame, I had to give someone else my bag of pecan, apricot, raisin and cashew mix a few months ago when I realised pecans set me off too I love pecans I find if everything is rinsed off very thoroughly I only get minor itchy scratchy tongue sensation. At its worst my throat feels quite tight, but it subsides after a short period of time.

I put it down to intolerence rather than allergy, but it has escalated into a full blown allergy over the last few years. Thank goodness all my children are also allergic to nuts; we can't have one gorging themselves on a Snickers bar to the horror of the others can we?! Seagazer
My YS has bad hayfever and has a reaction to kiwi and pineapple. His lips look awful after eating pineapple. Its interesting the connection between apples though as he doesn't like eating them, I wonder if he's had a reaction and its just put him off. DD had a fairly severe reaction to some red wine once, lips swelled and she couldn't breathe properly, quite scary. Luckily it all subsided once she'd had some antihistamines. We did have her tested in Harley Street but nothing showed up. She says she has problems with some alcohol, doesn't appear to have put her off though (she is 24 so allowed)
snowberry
Have any of you had hayfever over the last few weeks? I've had it quite badly on some days. At first I thought it was a 24 hour cold.

squiffs
I just ate something from a friend's graze box and it reminded me of this thread, because it's set me off pretty badly with my OAS. Itchy ear canal, tight throat, itchy tongue, tingly lips, - it was called 'el dorado' - had dried cranberries (usually fine), hazelnuts (usually fine, but these had their little skins on still...) and dark belgian chocolate coated cocoa beans (I think these may have been the culprit). Shame, they were delicious! Agh I need to go wash my mouth out now.
