Alis girls
Sounds Yumeeeeeeeeeee - thanks Patsy and love to your lovely mum a lady with more life than many - a touch of I think from the other lady (and I use the term lightly)
majuka
Can only echo what everyone else has said, sounds like a bit of the green eyed monster if you ask me. Your mum clearly has plenty going on in her life and should just ignore this silly woman. PS - would you mum like to adopt me, she sounds fab
Mrs Webmuppet
Your Mum sounds like a great Lady and should be applauded for being on the go. Her pud sounds fab.
Ain't Nobody Here
I think you should let your mum read all the lovely comments here . They would surely cancel out that one thoughtless remark .
craftyhunnypie
I sometimes get the comment.."you need to get out more"! No I don't actually! I am very happy baking, crafting, sewing, knitting, crocheting & looking after my chickens. I have a car I can go out in & I do so when I like. I'd feel a bit silly clubbing & pubbing it into the early hours these days anyway! I like to put everything into what I make & get great enjoyment out of it too. Some people are just really rude! I think they say such comments, because they can't do what you do & wish they could. Perhaps they are rubbish at baking etc. But a lot just can't help themselves & are utterly disgusting in their thoughts & what they say! Wish they'd leave us creative & cooking lot alone! foulbird
Thank you everyone for your nice comments and as always your support is much appreciated. Chatted to mum, she liked the things you said. As for the recipe it's a pretty basic one, my mum's personal preference is to not use flour or currants and to use a lot of alcohol. My daughter says her puddings are usually the most flammable things in the house. She pours boiling water over the oranges and leaves them to soak for ages, then simmers them for quite some time in a water/sugar syrup until she thinks they're done. That's it. She likes to use the orangey syrup in their Christmas punch. no flour??? What does she use? It's nearly 30 years since I last made a pudding so I have no idea what the recipe is but this sounds intriguing...
patsylabrador
Foulbird, this is the recipe she uses, (her quantities). I have no idea where it comes from but Mum adapts it as she sees fit. Recently she added Heston's oranges and apparently this year we should expect more walnuts! Christmas Pudding recipe 1lb breadcrumbs 1 3/4lb mixed fruit (sultanas, raisins, cherries) 3oz grated carrot 8oz suet (veg) 8oz soft brown sugar 4 1/2oz golden syrup 2 eggs (beaten) 2tbspns hot milk pinch salt, mixedspice, ginger (as much as you like) brandy, rum Mix together dry ingredients, add syrup, milk, eggs and spirit to dropping consisistency. Makes enough for 2 2pint greased basins. Wrap basin in grease proof paper and foil If pos.cook in a slow cooker on high for about 10 hrs. Remove wrapping and rewrap as before. Warm through on Christmas day. Everybody else, Thank you for confirming that the things I feel important actually are. We don't need to 'get a life', we have one. PapaJuliet
She should have said she can't be doing with "getting a life"... She has FAR too much to do already. PJ

kazmac
Just caught up with this - I agree with everyone else, your mum sounds fab. And an aerobics class in her 70s?? I'd say that's 'having a life'! Her christmas puddings sound great too. What an ignorant bisum that other creature sounds - and yes, she needs to learn some manners and probably 'get a life' herself
Alis girls
Sorry being mega thick here Patsy - when you say she adds Hestons oranges what do you mean (for those tutting - yes I need to get a brain! mwah mwah) I might try this recipe for a change _ thanks Edited November 24, 2011 by Guest
patsylabrador
Hi Alis Girls, I think it was last year that he produced a pud with a candied orange hidden in the middle, that's it really other than to say it was very nice. I didn't try his but I think other people on here did.

I always feel a little sorry for people who feel they have to do something specific or can't do something they don't feel is cool to 'have a life' I love my life but it most definitely isn't cool and includes too much baking for my waistline I have several friends with birthdays around now that I'm meeting Friday night so I'm just starting to look at my cookery books to see what I could make as presents
Lisa C
I really dislike people that make such comments! I believe your mom has a great life (well it sounds great to me!!). I know several 'older' ladies that enjoy baking, aerobics, cycling, gardening, campaigning, sewing - oh the list is endless! I can't wait to retire to 'get a life'. You're mom sounds great. I love the sound of the pudding, but I'm still mastering cookies at the moment to move onto anything else!
