craftyhunnypie
Hooray! I heard Jane from BHWT on Radio 2 today saying that the last hen had been released from it's cage today. No more battery cages! The enriched cages are not ideal, but it is certainly better. I actually cried when the announcement was given! Hooray for chickens able to flap their waings, scratch & perch! jackian
Great news ... A pity a lot of country's are not doing the same but hopeful we can hold our heads up and lead the way it is still not a great improvement thought but a great start
dancing cloud
A real achievement for the power of public opinion If people hadn't been so horrified at how battery hens were kept, nothing would have changed, so well done everyone that has campaigned on their behalf over the years (and well done all those that have rescued battery hens and given them freedom) The enriched cages are not fantastic, but certainly a vast improvement - next step to aim for will be the day when no more hens are kept in any sort of cage
Henslaved
I know it's a step in the right direction , but these so called 'enriched cages' don't look very enriched to me . Hopefully the amount of eggs that get laid on the floor and either get soiled, trampled or eaten will stop the use of cages of any sort. Wolfie
Jane was just awesome. What a diplomat. My ex-batts give their eggs to different people at work - in exchange for a short chicken chat. It's all about education, education, education

clucker1
Watched the French you tube video...just want to check my French out. It is comparing 2011 (etage 1) with the new regulations (etage 2)...is this in the UK or France? Can't see any difference in stage 2, perhaps there is more space? Sorry to be thick on this! It all looks preety gross to me! If this is what is happenening in the UK, will there still be battery hens (or whatever the new term for them...battery hens with a tinsy bit more space) in need of new homes? Barn hens and free range also need homes at the end of their 'usefullness' The new enriched caged birds will also be looking for new homes. All hens however kept are only ever kept while they are at their optimum laying period. The rehoming will continue.
Wolfie
They get a postcard area more space each hen. My French is rubbish, as is my metric measuring, but I know how small a postcard is. I think Lewis said it was a beer mat more room. Jane has made a huge difference. Remember she started off single handed. It's up to us lot with pet hens to spread the word and to inform our colleagues & friends (in a nice way) about the importance of buying British free range eggs, not imported ones. We need a campaign to flag up packet food with labels on the source of egg ingredients so our farmers who have complied with the battery ban get the support they deserve. keyhole kate
Gross if only supermarkets had a video screen above there egg isle showing this clip no words are needed I wonder how many customers would still buy battery hens eggs
clucker1
I am confused! The "new" enriched?????!!!!! chicken storage (can't think what else to call them) containers are still battery style, but a tinsy bit larger aren't they? Quite agree a video screen in a supermarket should be compulsory. So, to rehome battery chickens or what are they called now....where are they obtained from? Also, I had a friend who took on 3 battery girls with not the best results...2 died within a couple of months, but one is still going strong and that is 18 months on...so overall worth it...think she was just VERY shocked at their state of health and lack of wellbeing when she collected them and they had been inspected by a vet. Hey Clucker1 - Those three battery girls - even if two died within a couple of months of rescue - they had a proper life, so well done your pal. The one that's still alive - she's

Video an excellent idea. I wish it could be so.
clucker1
Hi Wolfie ...Thanks for that...yes the 2 chickens that died did have a great 2 months at the end of thier life being properly looked after with lots of free ranging and food. And the other ex batt has just restarted to lay again...she is now nearly 3 years old.
