National Poultry show-hens for sale?

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know of any shows in the Wirral, Liverpool, Chester, North Wales area?

I would like to go and have a look, but really wouldn't want to drive too far.

Thanks

There is a Southport and Ormskirk Poultry Club, their next show is 17th March

There is also a Cheshire County show

There are a lot of shows in Lancashire though if you want to travel a bit further out

If you are going to get chooks (lucky you, I'm  ) don't forget to take a nice sturdy box or two. I went last year to the Reading banty show and saw an escapee hen running around the car park and another one leap from the intended cardboard box and go squawking out of the exit nearest the 'for sale' area  I presume both got caught before they made it to the Kuntuchy Fried :anxious:

I don't know exactly about the Scottish National but normally on a 2 day show the birds are available for sale from 9 or 10am on Saturday till 1pm on Sunday but many of the best birds go early. Sometimes the organisers will allow new birds to be added on Sunday but not always

A lot depends on the people on the day for example at the English National the birds that went very quickly were pens of females and pet type birds but the birds that went fast at the Federation show were good breeding birds with the mixed colour pens of pet female birds not going as quickly

Many pens will contain a cockerel but not all, it will limit your choice down to about a third or less though so if looking to buy I'd always recommend going on the Saturday morning

I would really like to come on the Sunday - but only if there are a few Omleteers I can meet up with :anxious: .

I'm just after 2 - hybrids like my others, I suppose, but don't really mind what. I would like different egg colours (currently have 3 bog standard brown layers).

I would totally trust your judgment if you saw some that you thought were a good buy :D .

Me thinks you need a Cotswold Olive like my Mrs Dinosaur then! ;)

Will mainly be pure breeds for sale at the show so they won't lay all year round - can get large fowl pure breeds of similar size, banties will also mix with Hybrids though :D

Excellent, I am so very excited. ( I can admit that here without been thought off as mad!) Its my birthday treat. We are hoping to get 2 more hens, 3 at a push, to join our 3 hybrids. I am thinking either a Barnevelder, Orpington, Scots Dumpy or a Welsummer. Have a rabbit ark on order for intros so it depends how large it is as I don't want to get too many and keep them in too small a space initially.

Another question- will the breeders there know what vax's the stock have had? I really need them to be Vax'd against infective bronchitis....

Thank you!

I have had suspected infective bronchitis in the past with one of the girls. And two of them have come down with peritonitis which has made me think it was IB. I have looked into vaccines but at the moment its only in huge batches and is done as a vapour when they are chicks. Its one of those dilemas!

Although I love the look of some of the breeds mentioned, the main reason I'm getting 2 more is because so many people at work have expressed an interest in buying eggs from me. At the moment I only get 2 a day from 4 girls so I'd really like all year round layers if possible.

I might just have to come for the experience but buy a couple of hybrids from my local supplier :( .
