A quick peek at my newest additions!!

Recommended Posts

I had planned this trip for this Saturday coming, but having seen the horrific long range weather forecast I decided there was no time like the present, the new coop and huge run (4M) are ready and the new hybrids had arrived @ Newlands, so after doing the horses I turned my trusty 4x4 towards the motorway and off I went!:oops:

I apologise for there only being the 1 pic but it was freezing cold and it was hard enough deciding which hens I was having as well as getting piccies

So... what did I get?? I got, Poppy (Columbine) she's a little bit older by about 2 weeks, very sweet indeed, came up to us straight away, very inquisitive indeed. Amber (Amber) sorry for the un-original name but it actually suits her, she's a lovely girl, smallest of the bunch, and unusually (or so I'm told) has a lot of brown on her wings, again a sweet natured girl indeed. Cloudy (Light Sussex) my YD has been asking me to get her one for a while and again an inquisitive young girl indeed. Jet (Rhode Rock) bought in memory of my late Ebony, I was going to name her Ebony 2, but it didn't feel right when it came to it, she's going to be a nice sized girlie when she's done growing! Henriet` (Speckeldy) she has a dark grey colour rather then the really dark colour, an unusual looking girl indeed and currently the apple of my OD's eye!!

Quick pic here now

Poppy in the foreground, then anti-clockwise behind her, Amber, Cloudy, Jet (you can just see her head  ) and Henriet`.........

This was taken just as it was getting dark, they'd been subjected to Sunny telling them the house rules for 3 hours and we were just about to show them where they needed to go to get to bed!!

Oh, and not sure if I mentioned it or not, but I "rescued" a pair of Warrens last week too, Betzy & Ditzy, they haven't laid as yet and Betzy is obviously older than Ditzy, they are quite happy in their (purple eglu) right now and once they, Sunny & Eva have finished their worming next week, the plan is to free range them and finally have them in with Sunny & Eva.

That's it, NO more chooks for a while now I think :whistle: Got to finish off the WIR (which now needs extending already! ) but hubby refuses to do any more until the cold snap is over, can't blame him really, it's brass monkeys out there right now!

Sorry for the essay, more pics to follow soon!! :D:D

Lovely! It's lovely being able to put a hen to the name ;)

Okay so no guessing what you'll be doing tomorrow... watching newbies maybe? ;)

 Yep, but not until lunchtime, got the blacksmith in the morning plus my mate's home from her hols so LOTS of coffee to get drunk and stories to be told!!

 hoping that Poppy will be a !eggblue! layer :pray: and can't wait for Henriet` to lay !eggspeck! too, should be an interesting job collecting this lot's eggs in the future I think!:dance:

They are lovely babies very pretty. Nice that Poppy is so tame already as I thought they were flighty when young. Love her little quiff. :D You're going to have loads of fun.

Congratulations on your warrens as well. Quite a flock now :D

Yes she's seems nice and calm already, they reckon she may be a couple of weeks older than the others, but she came straight over to us and she's just sooo pretty! for !eggblue! now, but it doesn't matter what colour they are to be honest!!

Well, I think you were very, very wise to buy some more chooks before the poorer weather sets in. (wish I'd thought of that as a reason to get some more :wall: ):lol:

They are gorgeous! Haven't seen a Columbine before, but your Poppy is very like my Cream Legbar, Fogherty.

Have a wonderful coffee fuelled morning with your friend today and a chook-watching-wee-wee-dash relay this afternoon :D

:lol::lol: I can always find an excuse for a roadtrip Mum!! The Columbine is a relatively new hybrid based on the Legbar, they can be flighty but Poppy is proving to be inquisitive and the leader of the group so far, she was first out this morning and has spent a lot of time in and out of the coop all day, they thought she was a week or 2 older than the others, but time will tell I suppose!

Great morning spent with my mate freezing ourselves solid waiting for the blacksmith to shoe our horses..Brrr! She's just back from the Maldives and was telling me all about going swimming with Manta Rays, gawd from her description they are MASSIVE!!

Babies have been very good and had put themselves to bed by the time I went out to them again this evening, all cosied up in the nesting boxes!:roll:

Will try and get some decent pics over the week-end of them all, they look so strange with their stubby little pale pink combs and wattles, so used to my other girls "headgear" now

Manta rays may well be "massive" ... but ... do they lay edible EGGS!? If not, doesn't matter how big they are :talk2hand:

Legbars are known to be "flighty" too, so your Columbines have clearly inherited *that* gene  but, adorable nonetheless :D

So, do tell ... which ones of your chooks are being re-shoed???? Bet that is a sight to behold :lol:

I have Columbines and a Cream Legbar, there is a theory that the darkest coloured columbines are more likely to lay green eggs, I got the darkest two when I got mine and they both lay green  My CLB lays beautiful blue eggs, as does my legbar x leghorn.

Glad your Columbine isn't too flighty and is friendly... My CLB is the same, a total sweetheart.

You mentioned a WIR, as you currently have your set up in three separate coops, make sure you introduce them carefully if they are all going to be combined in the one run. Loads of good advice on here about intros.
