Chortle Chook
My neighbour has just had a wee baby girl (born on Valentine's day). I did not give them any of our eggs while she was pregnant because I seem to remember having read somewhere that pregnant women should not eat eggs. I don't know how true this is. Also can she now have our eggs or should nursing mothers avoid them? (My chickens run about my garden all day every day so are very much FR. They are wormed and I poo pick every day and give them a full clean every week. I feed them on Omlet organic crumbs but they aslo get salad and a little pasta and cheese.) chickenanne2
Well-cooked eggs are fine, not aw/runny yolks when preg. I think when nursing is all back on the menu again - the risk is salmonella.
The Dogmother
As with ANY eggs, just cook them thoroughly if you're in an 'at risk' category
Chortle Chook
Thanks chickenanne2 and dogmother. I'll be going round with present for baby Florence this evening and some eggs for Mum with strict instructions to make them hard boiled and not to eat Spaghetti carbonara . The Dogmother
Fried or poached are fine so long as the yolk is hard - can't bear hard yolks myself.
memphisto
As an expectant mum, all my midwife said was with ANY eggs, ensure they are well cooked and to avoid raw eggs and raw egg products (such as homemade mayo), can't find anything to say otherwise. I wouldn't hesitate to eat eggs from my new neighbours chooks myself.
The Dogmother
You'll hate me for saying this, but we weren't aware of any of this when I was expecting Rosie, so I continued eating soft eggs and brie
Patricia W
Snap, Dogmother! In my day, the forbidden food was potatoes with any bit of green on them - some connection with spina bifida I think from memory. But poached eggs, brie, etc absolutely fine. My daughter in law is pregant and pining for both these!
The Dogmother
I think that green potatoes are toxic full stop. Eggs are so nutritious that it seems a shame not to eat them. I ate lots of fish when I was expecting and still ate the odd bit of liver too. I think that a lot of it depends on your immune system; having been brought up around my grandfolks' livestock I think I must be pretty immune to most stuff. chickenanne2
I think most eggs are salmonella-free now anyway! Tsk, tsk, eating liver when pg, too much vitamin A - apparantly v bad for fetus. And fish =mercury, so that's bad too . I generally found out what I "wasn't supposed" to eat moments after I'd just eaten it!!! Amazing how many people are prepared to tell you "you shouldn't have eaten that " after the event, but not before...
memphisto
I kind of think that if our grandmothers got by perfectly well without all these do's and don't, then we can get by.....my midwife doesn't share my views though!

I've never had children but am inclined to second your view for life / food in general . . . till I remember how much life expectancy has increased
Kalu
Am sure my midwife told me to avoid raw eggs, prawns, blue cheese etc only for the first 6 weeks of pregnancy and then to enjoy being pregnant, eat healthy but enjoy eating. She was a good old fashioned midwife! (It was only 6 years ago). I am sure some of the food allergies in children today are because pregnant mums avoid too much - peanuts etc. Give me a slice of peanut butter on toast any day. We didn't have any food allergies in my day (oh dear i am sounding like my mum more and more. ).....I am not 40....yet.
essexhen
My LO has just turned one and our hens arrived about halfway through my pregnancy - pretty sure I had lots of eggs including runny boiled ones, dont recall anything about it being a no-no. Stella14
Remember that Hybrids are now all vaccinated against the various forms of Salmonella and E Coli (amongst other things). Pure breeds are not though.
