The Good Life Again! - UPDATE!

Recommended Posts

We have been reducing the number of animals we keep buuuuuuuttttt......... when someone phones and is offering an abandoned lamb and a free bag of milk replacer there's only one answer

Meet little George...... :D

He's taking to the bottle quite well....

and looking for more milk!

He was born yesterday morning and left at the bottom of the field by his Mum, she would only suckle the other twin. We collected him at 6pm, he'd just had elasic bands around his dangly bits and tail, was bundled into a box and had a ride in the car and then put into a pen on his own :| He had suckled from his Mum while she was penned into the corner but he'd had nothing else until we brought him home. He's really strong and feeding well.

We're hoping for a cousin to come and join him, it's quite sad to have just one on his own :(

His mother is a mule and I think the ram was a Border Leicester - he's a Heinz 57 I suppose!

The farmer only has 8 more ewes to lamb so I think he's asking around, if we have no luck I will certainly give you a shout Lewis - are you down here or over there? :D

We always find it difficult to take the animals off to the abattoir - we're really not looking forward to Wednesday, last years lambs are so friendly.....and so are the pigs.

Just got back from another night Lambing (in Aber).

Think theres about 1,200 Organic ewes on this farm so a couple thousand lambs there but we start at the Uni farm in a couple of weeks and doing 6 weeks of nights there.

Its a big research centre so last year they had 120 pet lambs and everything is part of a Performance Recorded Flock so everything and everyone is weighed and scored. They're bottle fed to start off with but luckily get used to a bucket drinker eventually!

Farmer at home normally has a few pet lambs though, Tasha got a couple last year! :D

Jazz and Tali weren't too impressed when he started bunting them, looking for milk! Jazz walked off to find her ball but George and Tali just went round and round in circles for ages

George won't be out on the grass today - evil, cold rain today.

Good luck with all those lambs Lewis.

Yep a Cade lamb is another word for a pet or bottle fed lamb.

Could be that the ewe died, isn't producing enough milk (if she has 3 or 4 lambs and only 2 teats) or that she rejected them for various reasons.

Hows George getting on? :)

Bring him in with the dogs?!!! - he'd be piddling and pooing all over their beds!! - and he'd also be bothering them for milk and I really don't think they appreciate that

He's doing really well and we'll take him out on the grass for a while again today. He still needs the heat lamp for a while so we may see if we can rig one up in the lambing barn and he can have that all to himself and the other 5 sheep will be the other side of the gate in the paddock so he will at least see them.

We took last years lambs and the two GOS pigs to the abattoir this morning :| - still as difficult as ever. We were there and back before George needed his bottle!

We left the trailer on the drive ready to be cleaned out and two of the farm cats decided it was a sunbed
