auntielizzie
As I've had Betty and Bessie for a year I thought I would do the maths - my first calculation included all costs, including initial outlay for hens, housing, feeders, etc etc etc. This worked out to about £2 per egg laid in one year That being so shocking I did the maths again; taking away all the initial costs and just accounting for feed, bedding, treats and other essentials (Diatom, Flubenvet, etc etc for the year, each egg has cost about 80p - thats only £9.60 a dozen All I can do is Of course the joy and pleasure I get from having the girls is priceless
Luvachicken
My hubby says that every time I buy them something. But there is nothing like my girls eggs in the shops. I hate it when you have to buy traitor eggs too. I think my girls are worth every penny
Chookiehen
Chickens are like any other pet - they cost us a fortune, but make up for it in their stress relieving qualities! And chickens have the added benefit of at least trying to pay their keep with the odd egg, unlike my "guard" dog, who lets the kitten beat him up, and cowers at the end of my bed when it's windy at night. And lets not even start on the kitten and his penchant for wallpaper climbing!!
Ain't Nobody Here
I try to tell myself they only really cost the price of their pellets (that's all they would really ask for, I think!). As I sell 4-12 eggs a week at work, they really are paying their way (except in the school hols!). Yeah right .
sadietoo
Well, I usually end up having to pop round the corner to the man near us who keeps chickens to buy eggs and they are only £2.40 per dozen which is quite reasonable... .

counturchickens
We call them traitor eggs too! I bought some when my sis came to stay while she was pregnant, just in case. When we first got our girls we factored the house and run into the first 1/2 dozen, so they were £100 per egg of course they were actually priceless. Pearls007
Our price per egg was decreasing nicely after a year with two eggs per day from the two girls. Then we got a man in to build them a big run to replace the omlet netting......................
