Creating a 'hotspot' for ipad

Recommended Posts

Hello.

I have been looking at getting a tablet for a while and keep coming back to the ipad. I have read somewhere that you can turn your mobile phone into a hotspot for wifi. Yesterday I popped into Apple and they said you can do this with an iphone but they didn't know if I would be able to do it with my mobile which is an Xperia.

I don't really understand it all that well. Does anyone know the answer? Also, what is your opinion of the new ipad compared to others on the market that may well be cheaper?

Many thanks.

Go to Settings / Network - if you see 'Set Up Personal Hotspot', it's not turned on. If it's turned on (i.e. you have a user ID and password from your network provider), you'll just see it under Settings as 'Personal Hotspot'

Unfortunately, unlike on Android platforms, you have to request it being enabled by your network operator (and make sure 3G is turned on!!). The annoying thing is, on iphones you have to pay for tethering as it won't come out of your existing data allowance.

3 mobile gives you it as part of your iphone deal, but every one else charges around £% or so for half a gig.

The easiest way to tether without paying for the privilege is to buy an android mobile and turn tethering on on that - it's free on android as it's done purely by software on the phone without the network provider being aware.

Tethering's a big con really as if I have 1GB ('unlimited' [!!]) data for example, how I choose to use it should be my business - if I tether the data to another device, then it should just come out of my data limit, IMHO. :notalk:

I'm toying with buying an iPad - the iPad3 is faster, has a better battery, and much better screen than the iPad2. That said, on a good day on eBay, you can get an iPad2 for £250-260 so given that the iPad2 is a good little gadget, it's worth asking youself if you really need the higher res screen at the cost of £180 extra...
