The Dogmother
A timely reminder after I helped a woman get her border collie to the vet after it had collapsed in the park due to (what looked like) heat exhaustion... the daft moo had had it running around in the full sunshine in 28deg Luckily the vet is just a quarter of a mile away so I helped her to carry it after emptying my water bottle over the dog. Please, please exercise your dogs at a cooler time of the day, try to stop them from running too much (I know it's not easy) and make sure that they have plenty of water/dips in a river or lake. If they look too hot or appear to be labouring, cover them in a cold, wet towel and get them to the vet pronto.
angeluk69
This is one of the many things that annoys me during these hot spells we get... Today I saw a dog in a car in full sunlight and as the driver walked off I said 'Excuse me, are you really going to leave your dog there?' He stuck his finger up at me and shouted over 'I'm only nipping to the cash point, get a life luv!'. So I waited for the guy to come back...20 mins later he returned!!!! And then he wondered why his dog wasn't too pleased to see him. Number plate noted and passed to the RSPCA. 5 mins in a car is more than enough to kill a dog. I must admit I don't bother even trying to get my Basset out of the door after 10am on days when hot weather is forecast, and before 10am he isnt even awake properly so just isnt interested. Today I have had to add ice cubes to the water fountain and to the chickens water, as well as setting up shaded areas and making sure a couple of rooms in the house are cool for the cats. Also gave the chooks a lovely spritz with some water this evening as they seemed to be waning.
lillybettybabs
A good way of cooling dogs down is to apply a wet towel to the belly area. Keep an eye on your dogs tongue if it curls at the end or becomes spoon shaped then the dog is over heating.
The Dogmother
Good tips there I gave the hounds a later walk than usual in a field which is usually pretty shaded at that time of the day, and has a cool stream running through it, saluki cross lurchers don't usually feel the heat as much as other dogs but I'm not taking any chances. Was rewarded by hearing a cuckoo and a nightingale Luckily my house is lovely and cool inside, the dogs are in the kitchen, which has a cool stone floor. lillybettybabs
Good plan to have a stream on you walk - My lot wallowed in it last night. I have furminated the Fabradors so they feel much better and thankfully their kennel is nice a shady. The cat only managed an hour outside yesterday and fell asleep on the tile floor with the bunny rabbits for the rest of the day.
The Dogmother
That reminds me; Cyrus is moulting, must get the Furminator on him too. That border collie was very fluffy and she'd been throwing a ball for it for ages I hope it is OK. The vets know me and I asked them to let me know how it is. Lavenders_Blue
How daft to throw a ball for a dog in this boiling hot weather! Both yesterday and today Tango has pestered me to play ball with her while we've been out walking She has got a few quick throws just as we finish our walk but nothing else. Yes I am a mean dog mummy but better that than heat stroke. She won't paddle or swim at all, so I have been carrying water with me so she can at least have a drink while we are out. These stupid people should be made to run around in a fur coat all afternoon in the heat!
Jules.
Thanks for this information As I type Lily is lying next to me on the sofa with the electric fan blowing gently on her.
The Dogmother
Aww, bless. Mine went for a romp in the river later yesterday afternoon. If they get too hot, then cool water on their feet (stand them in cold running water) or a cool, wet towel over them, particularly on their tummy is good fro bringing their body temp down. My two are sprawled on the cool stone floor in the kitchen.
Seagazer
Its daft isn't it. As a rule I don't take Cookie out in the heat - she really doesn't cope with the hot weather. Luckily we have a couple of places near us with lakes/rivers so she can always cool off then but I do try to take her out early in the morning. freddie
Flynn just finds the most glutinous stinking muddy puddle and lays in it....a good look on a white dog:) she is short haired, but hates the heat, , we're lucky though as there are many streams for her near, to get muddy amd soggy in.... Duncan08
I didn't take Dunc out at all on Saturday, but as it cooled a little yesterday evening I soaked him with the hose and took him for a leisurely strol at about 8.30pm. He had still dried out completely though by the time we got back. I wasn''t being cruel with the hose by the way - its one of his favourite games
Lavenders_Blue
Tango loves the hose too It's weird that for a dog who HATES getting wet - won't even step on wet grass if she can help it - she really enjoys being sprayed with the hose and goes absolutely bonkers as soon as we start unreeling it! She's had a couple of soakings this weekend to cool her off.
