Do chickens groom each other

Recommended Posts

I was stood in my conservatory watching my 2 chooks who had jumped up onto the back go the garden bench which is at wind height. I started to notice that my more dominant amber star started to what I thought was peck my bluebell. However, as I watched I saw that she was not doing it viciously and in between grooming herself she appeared to be grooming the other one. Is this normal or is there a reason for it?

I don't know if it's normal, but I have certainly observed Betty "grooming" Bessie. Betty is the more dominant hen as with your two. I have wondered if it is because they are a "pair". I have never seen Bessie grooming Betty though. I would say it is definitely grooming rather than any kind of aggressive behaviour.
