They will be named - as these are not going to be meat - their offspring in the future will be though. Trying to think of suitable girls names. Not getting a boar until next year. I understand from a butcher friend that Kune pigs aren't any good for meat - apparently it's mostly fat and the meat isn't at all tasty.... sorry Butchers - and the abattoir - always say that the rare breed pigs are fatty anything which doesn't look like the lean commercial types are considered fat by them..........but the flavour is superb and the fat helps it to cook, you don't have to eat the fat. As long as they're not allowed to become too fat then the Kune Kune has lovely meat apparently. We've not had any ourselves. I'm not sure they are going to have much of a hope about keeping the grass and hedges down!! I think Matilda and Honey are nice names for piggies...don't worry if you don't though!! craftyhunnypie Posted August 2, 2012 Author Share Posted August 2, 2012 Well as with any animal - you have to look at how well they have been kept & how bright & alert ( in good health) they are. Things like eyes, ears, nose - check for any sort of runnyness or discharge, chesck their droppings etc . I'm sure they will be fine. Kune Kunes are barrel shaped - round & fat! If you look on google images - there are lots of pictures of them. They are classed as ' friendly' pigs & thrive on human contact. We have chose this breed to start with for this reason - so as we can get used to pig keeping before jumping in at the deep end with the normal boisterous Welsh pigs which grow huuuuge. We have done heck of a lot of research & made sure everything is above board. Yes I think you named one of our piggies! It seemed a really nice name & hubby liked Florence! We could alsways shorten both names to Tilly & Flo. But I do like full traditional names. P.S It's been a long couple of days with sheep jumping the stream & being naughty - I think there are a few typos in the above?? I love the big pointy ears. I understand now that you meant suitable from a husbandry/ health point of view. Tilly and Flo are lovely names too. They have a rubber dummy, a ball type thing with rubber round & a treat dumbell thing - which I intend putting a few pig nuts in. I'll see how they go on with these & I may invest in a super Kong toy I've seen. Bored pigs are mischeivous pigs, so I'm not taking any chances! Plus we intend on spending a lot of time with them. They are very lucky girlies saved from going the abbatoir. I can't say that for all their offspring though. (gulp) It's reasurring that you love yours Redwing, it really is - as I only get to hear from Commercial points of view. So thanks for that! I'm very excited tonight! craftyhunnypie Posted August 14, 2012 Author Share Posted August 14, 2012 Oh I have been soooo busy playing with the piggies! They are so well behaved & fun. They are so intelligent too! I've spent absolutely ages sat in with them. It is hard to pull yourself away from them, as they love my company & are very entertaining. They love back scratching & belly rubs. Flo the black one just rolls over when get this special horse grooming brush out!! I laughed yesterday - as I'd been into Aber. I came back & there was no sign of the piggies. I looked in their big ark & they were fast asleep. Tilly the spotty one was peeping at me, but all I could see of Flo was a teeny bit of her bum & her tail. She was totally buried in the hay! They've had their morning ration of pig nuts & an apple each. Feeding time at the zoo is mid afternoon - where they will have their other half of their rations. Their favourite play thing is to carry a stick / twig around, then dump it in their bed! They love their muddy wallow too. That is so sweet to see! Can you tell I love them?
