Which Smartphone?

Recommended Posts

I have the opportunity to finally upgrade my ancient mobile and am going to treat myself to a smartphone!

Trouble is I can't decide which one - I'm torn between the Samsung Galaxy Ace III, the Nokia Lumia 900 and the Iphone 4s.

I am inclined to go with the apple as I already use itunes and have apps for my ipod, but I quite fancy the bigger size of the Nokia and Samsung. :? Anyone got one of these and any likes or dislikes that might help me decide?

After having an HTC Desire for a few years,I would now never even think about anything else.

They run on Android, which is fantastic for me as I use Google calendars so I can link that to my phone (Android is a Google system)

They are fast, reliable & work remarkably well.

The new HTC Ones look amaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaazing :P:P:P

I hadn't really considered the HTC as ES has had one and didn't like it. The screen was very slow to respond and he finally punched it in frustration and broke it  He has replaced it with the Nokia Lumia 800 and has been assured by the salesman that it is punch proof! :notalk:

Fred I do fancy the iphone, but not the newest - that will be even more expensive than the 4S!

I love the look and feel of the Nokia - if it were android instead of windows, I would go for it.

I am a BIG fan of Apple, the iphone is brilliant, very intuitive. Apple products do have a run of 12 -18 months, so a new one is likely to be out in the coming months, rumours are rife. If you can wait a while, I would, if you want Apple. I shouldn't be significantly different in price though - so don't rule it out! But you should be able to pick up the older models more cheaply if you don't want the latest!

I would say the iPhone, but WAIT until September, as the new iPhone is coming out.

Sorry to invade, but have you seen anything official about the iPhone 5 Fred? My Dad said I could have his iPhone 4 when it came out, but I'm after a smartphone for uni. If the rumours are true (I heard September 12th?) I will hold out until Christmas :P

I'll have to investigate some of the other phones mentioned on this thread too :)

I have a Nokia N7 and it's the worst phone ever - totally not intuitive :/

Don't know the model you mention, but if it's anything like the N7 steer very clear!

(I got it because it has an offline satnav, which I really wanted, but it's soooo hard to use!)

Just about everyone who's got one of the galaxys is very very happy - was playing with a friend's for an hour on the train to London tonight, and I think that's what I'm going to get. The big advantage (for me) is that it has a replaceable battery which extends its life and if, like me, you go to places where you can't charge the phone is an absolute godsend (when an apple battery stops working it's the end of the phone - and you can't carry a spare)

Having said that, everyone I know who has the apple loves that to bits too - and it's probably the easiest to use if you're not techy

None of them are a patch on my old HTC Trinity (5 years and still going strong)! I will have to replace it soon, I suppose :/

Another iPhone fan here, I got my first one two years ago and I'm looking to upgrade. I will say however that while it's fantastic as a smartphone, for actually making phone calls it's not brilliant! I don't make many calls though, it's the Facebook/email/Googling/apps that I use it for.

I am hoping to get an older (but newer than mine) model more cheaply because I don't want the Iphone5 - if you're not bothered about having the latest, you can save money by accepting a slightly older model, whatever phone you eventually decide on.

Nothing official has been released by apple, but a lot of sources are claiming that they will announce it between September 12th and 21st

 Have an i4 = LOVE

apparently mine is up for renewal in time for christmas - OH has i4S - not much difference - so all holding out for the i5

ES wants my i4 to replace i3, YS wants i3 to replace Blackberry

If I do disappear - have been killed off for a mobile device

I've just upgraded. Had an HTC desire HD, now I have the galaxy s3 and I lurve it.

Nearly got the new htc but just fancied a change. I really like android, and I think the nokia is windows, so not many apps. I'm a bit anti iphone purely for the size of the screen..... you really can't go wrong with the samsung!

I'm looking forward to the arrival of a Sony Experia P this week to replace my much despised Blackberry Curve. I did fancy a HTC Sensation but O2 don't have them and the Xperia P seems very similar. The phone signal here in the middle of nowhere is rubbish so I'm restricted to O2 and Vodafone

Funny because I have been thinking of getting a new phone too so I am reading this with interest.

I currently have an Iphone but I don't love it so have been looking at BlackBerry phone's online, as we have a BlackBerry PlayBook in the house I could bridge between the two and also Internet tether.

All far too techy for me so I have to visit carphone warehouse

We also have an ipad as well but it seems hubby prefers that to the PlayBook  (probably can't work it out) so this is mine! I had a nice Cath Kidston case on that too!! Blasted bloke!

Thanks for all the feedback, it's been much appreciated! 8)

I must admit the Nokia Lumia is a gorgeous phone - have been playing with ES's and it is a lovely size and shape, and very sturdy. The only real downside for me is the Windows OS (although I understand it will be upgraded to Windows 8 in the near future). I was being swayed by the improved battery life over the iphone, but according to Son, with regular use it isn't that much better and still needs an almost daily charge. And I would still need to use both phone and ipod which defeats the object somewhat

So, on balance, and because I am fed up of not being able to make up my mind, I will be going for the iphone.

Maybe next time I upgrade I will change to the Nokia. As for the Samsung, I don't know, it just doesn't do it for me.

Now I just need to decided if I can wait for the iphone 5 to come out :D

MY main use for my phone is its camera. I have a Sony Ericsson Vivaz (Symbian OS),

although it is currently in for repair after it suffered from a power surge while being charged on a train and blew the whole electronics system  , but that is another story.

The Sony Ericsson doesn't really support apps, but it has an amazing 8.1mp camera and I think you can buy it today for about €130 (£110). Also has 720p HD video recording. Also has a very decent battery life. It also supports memory cards.

Only contradictions of the Vivaz are that it has a WICKED slow start up time (about 60 seconds, wouldn't want to have to ring 999 in an emergency) and that it can occasionally be a bit sluggish during texting, looking through pictures etc.

Other than that a great phone (for what I use it for anyway)
