minieggs
So true to form, we have got morehens disease, and are looking at upgrading our classic to an eglu cube...I'm really excited about them having more space and the possibility of getting a couple more hens, but am a little concerned about our Poland. She's a right daft chicken, and just stands there scared if you put her on top of a brick...will she manage the cube stairs? Or do any of you have any suggestions to making sure she knows how to get up there? Would you say the cubes are worth the money? And do they provide enough space for 6 bantams ( they are normally out most days but the other week there was a daytime visit from mr fox so now we will only be able to let them out when we're in the garden) . Any help would be greatly appreciated
good_egg
We modifies our cube ladder as suggested on here with some garden netting. Was having to lift my babies up. Can't get img code link while on phone but pic is here
Spinning Top
We haven't got bantams but I was concerned about a couple of little girls we got at POL. I put a half log under the bottom step to give them a start up and they were fine. Now they're bigger I've taken it away and they all hop up happily. My Cream Legbar is pretty ditzy but she just followed the others. If your Poland doesn't work it out, how about putting her in for the first couple of evenings to show her where to go? Yes, the Cube is an incredible piece of kit. It's a lot of outlay but well worth it and cleaning out at waist height is a dream...
mollyripkim
Absolutely love my cube having had a Go before, I use the netting on the ladder as well and also a log. Ivy the white silkie took three months before she managed to get the ladder on her own so every evening I was crawling in to put her to bed, luckily she let's me pick her up easily. I think the breakthrough came when she started to lay although her first few eggs were laid wherever she happened to be. She is still not the brightest but I love her quirky little character. Anyway, I digress, yes the cube is brilliant. and all my girls are bantams.
Blue44
Hi I have 4 silkies in a cube they never got used to the steps as the angle was too high off the ground and the gaps between a bit big - I just replaced them with a wooden ramp. I love the cube its so easy to keep clean. My four all sleep on top of each other in the nest box!!...omlet say it can hold upto 10 silkies. Margaret
I have 4 big girlies and 5 tiny ones inclucing 2 Polands and they actually dont even bother with the ladder just fly up and they are still quite young, about 20 weeks. They manage fine. If you read my thread in the Eglu, Cubes and Runs, ' Brilliant idea ' you will see how I overcome the ladder problem As for the Cube, marvellous invention, I couldnt live without mine, makes life so much easier.
