good_egg
In the last few weeks Dorothy has gone from being a small combed no wattles chick to having a red face and comb and giant wattles! My instant panic - is Dorothy a she? I think so, she is about 25 weeks so seems right.... Second panic, should any girl with such a red face not be laying eggs? I'm not in a hurry for eggs but having had Viv laying internally and just thinking she hasn't started I'm a bit nervous.... Had a good feel and no squishyness, but thought I'd share my panic and get some omleteer experience please!!
Egluntyne
Can you give us a picture of all of her?
good_egg
Only got one from a few weeks ago before she went so red... Can get another one tomorrow - what are you looking for?
zakjon-98
I'm not sure. I agree a recent full shot would be good because you can see the tail feathers and body shape. Hope she's a girl!

Egluntyne
She looks like a hen to me. I suppose the time of year and short days will be slowing her down.
good_egg
Phew! Thank you. Don't mind her not laying just worrying in case there's anything wrong. If she's happy and healthy (and a girl) that's fine. I'll probably keep groping her tummy for the next few weeks though!
sjp
I've got 3 girls that are 26 weeks old that aren't laying yet that I think will start about Christmas the CLB cross crouched for Boris my cockeral Friday and the maran cross has been crouching for a couple of my top girls and from time to time for me if I stroke her back.personally I like my girls to take thier time coming into lay as they seem to be better layers once we get rid of this current weather system and get a nice bit of winter sun they'll start to think about laying
good_egg
Thanks sjp. I've always hoped these girls would take a bit to get into it so they were older. But because Viv had issues I think I'm a bit paranoid. I'll try and relax and let nature do its thing! Lol
Purplemaniacs
I would say a girl but I have limited experience The wyandottes I hatched at Easter, only one has started to lay and then stopped again, the other one a gold laced one and the welsummers have not started yet, I think they are waiting for the spring. I am not bothered and will be patient Chrissie
Mrs_B
Your hens are gorgeous, good_egg! I'm afraid I can't help with your question though, I just wanted to comment on how lovely your girls look Three of my girls are white and their feathers haven't been perfectly white since all this rain made the lawn muddy, but your chickens look well groomed! x
Plum
She is beautiful, eggies on the way probably feb 1st
good_egg
thanks Mrs_B. I think they are lovely, but I am biased! Dot has good feathers for disguising mud and she seems to be quite a fusspot in terms of cleaning. Buffy likes to mess around in puddles but so far has only really made her feet messy. We keep getting hard frosts so more often have confused hens sliding around the garden than mud at the moment, although yesterday was a different story! Thanks Plum, I will of course update you all when there is any sign of an egg.
good_egg
Just to say that our Dorothy squatted today! Meant she got caught for a cuddle and then suffered the indignance of a bum bath as she had a bit of muck. She was so much bolder than normal, and poor Buffy seemed a bit out of sorts as I think D has stolen top spot and is strutting her stuff! Hen house politics!
