chuckmum6
OH has just been told he has pre diabetes (he has the early signs that might unchecked develop into diabetes). Does anyone any tips to diet for this, I understand whole foods, less fatty foods, more fruit and veg, anything else? He will need much smaller portion of food which he will find hard, he is a walking dustbin! Thanks
abwsco
I've got to see the nurse tomorrow following on from a diabetes test and also cholesterol test. Receptionist did tell me I didn't have diabetes so I'm either pre diabetic or the C levels aren't good. Forgot to ask her about my cholesterol levels
quickcluck
Mostly it's a low fat healthy eating plan that helps. Avoid dried fruits as they have a very high sugar content. Also soft fruits are high, so only 2 or your 5 a day should be made up of fruit. Only 1 banana! Some people don't acknowledge the pre diabetic label, you either have it or you don't. However, if eating habits are changed, weight reduced and exercise increased, you may will stave it off for a bit longer!

Alis girls
basically eat like a diabetic, cutting sugar as much as poss, fat and salt and increase exercise. You;ll never completely iradicate sugar its everywhere even in gravy granules. Diabetes UK is brill - on internet and they have loads of advice. Dont buy diabetic products - very pricey and full of sweetners which can give u the squits. . Each year he should have bloods, weight, blood pressure , urine and foot check. Might not be able to get retinopathy check but mention it to his optician when next having an eye check. Good luck Ali x
Couperwife
I don't know much about diabetes, but I know that a woman at slimming world has really altered her blood sugar levels by using the plan for about 6 months. You can also eat a lot of food on slimming world, so he shouldn't be hungry. Hope this might be useful. Cathy X
rachel19
Cinnamon is brilliant for this - my grandad was pre-diabetic and they advised lots of cinnamon as it helps prevent too much sugar being absorbed or something. He is now off of the warning list so it must have worked!
chickencam
Interesting, because I am worried about my OH he is overweight and drinks far more than he used to (fluids not alcohol) although he drank very little before. His Grandpa was diabetic and he is very like him.
Willow
Exercise is also good. I have regular checks as I'm overweight and my family has a history of early onset adult diabetes. I do like cake so not great at reducing sugar there but because I cook from scratch I can eliminate it for all savoury dishes (it is quite shocking how much sugar is in pre-prepared food). But I think it is probably the exercise I do that makes the most difference in me keeping diabetes at bay (so far ).
sadietoo
I suffer badly with hypoglycemia which is sort of the opposite but the same dietary advice applies I think. Personally I wouldn't worry too much about naturally occurring fats but I'd agree that you need to really try to eliminate all sugar from your diet or at least reduce it drastically, and eat as much unprocessed food as you can, but don't forget fruit generally has a lot of sugar in it - all natural but nevertheless it can play havoc with your insulin levels, as does caffeine in my experience. chuckmum6
Thank you, OH is in denile about the seriousness and very touchy about the subject. I have order a book to inform him, hopefully he will absorb the long term implications soon, if he doesn't make some changes soon.
Mrs Webmuppet
There is always the stealth approach to the whole healthy eating/cutting down a bit. Just slowly change the contents of his lunchbag and ever so slowly alter breakfasts and dinners so that he barely notices. Using this method it took Mr W a while to notice...........he even lost a stone without releasing he had been put on a diet!
Space Chick
Low GI foods are good.... so replacing white rice with brown rice... eating more pulses etc.

We will see if the children and OH notice We eat very little processed food, it is portion size that needs addressing in the main.
