How noisy are they..??

Recommended Posts

Mine generally 'bok-bok' when pottering around, not really audible from another garden unless you were listening out for it.

When they were young hens and not as worldly-wise (as I suspect ex-batts will be), they didn't enjoy any pigeons/magpies/crows in the vicinity and used to signal their presence with a louder squawk, enough to go and investigate.

Now they only tend to do loud noises (can hear them from inside the house, from about 150ft away) when they have just laid and want to announce the freshly laid egg! It's not often, and usually morning time about 10-11am when neighbours are at work. Going out and shushing them often quietens them down!

Hope this helps,

Mine aren't ex-batts but I don't suppose they are much different!

My girls generally announce pretty loudly that they've laid an egg - although not all of them do it and some mornings I don't hear anything at all. It sounds really loud to me and I do worry about the neighbours - although in 5 years "Ooops, word censored!"ody has complained and some of them say they quite like the noise!

I generally keep an eye on the clock when they start and it never, ever lasts more than 5 minutes so I just hope it's short enough not to annoy people too much. It's also just a once a day thing, the rest of the day is just gentle burbling which "Ooops, word censored!"ody could object to.

They do make an unbelieveable racket if there is a predator in the garden - a sparrowhawk really set them off last week and obviously a fox does the same :anxious: .

I'm fairly new to chicken keeping but the 3 ex batts we had last September have been very quiet. We have a small garden with close neighbours and the eglu is right next to the house (and the neighbours fence !) but I never hear them. They make a quiet chirpy noise when they're pottering around but our neighbours say they hear them only very ocassionally... I try and keep them sweet with the odd box of eggs :)

I live in a terrace block and none of my neighbours mind at all .I have no ex batts but 4 hybreds am sure that they are all the same . mine make very little noise ,One of my neighbours seems to think I make more noise chattering to them

The only time they do bok is when sometimes an egg is laid "Have you seen it ,I am so clever!" and when we introduced 2 new girls little Rosie was not amused and protested for a couple of days .

I think more noise is made by pidgeons, magpies, dogs barking , lawnmowers and cars revving etc., .

Enjoy your girls .

Mine are only occasionally noisy after laying an egg, and make a racket when they see a cat. But they make much less noise than the neighbour's dog.

You can always bring the neighbours on board by taking round some eggs occasionally.

Quite! Us chicken keepers seem to do a lot of worrying about the noise our birds might make. Funny how barking dogs, revving cars and the like are apparently acceptable neighbourhood noises, but as soon as a chook starts up, particularly a cockerel, it's a no no.

Apart from egg announcements, the only other noise could be the rather irritating whinging that you might start to get if you spoil them!

Out of all the chickens I have had I have to say my ex batts Puding and Pie have been the quietest. And I can award the noisiest to Isla my Bluebell all sorts sets her off but mostly a neighbours ginger cat .

As someone said its funny how we worry over the noise when there are so many other noises going on around that no one bats an eyelid at, where I live we are currently having to contend the noise from a housing development they are making pilings or something which is constant banging throughout the day ! and yes that did also start Isla off this morning :wall:

I've only had mine here for a few hours but I've already found myself apologising for the noise! I hope they're just settling but it seems one is a little freaked out by other animals, particularly our neighbourhood cats.

Funny the noisiest hen was picked by my noisiest child!

With any luck its just settling in, When I got Isla, Trixie, Annie and Clarabel end of December 12 my older girls Marliyn, Connie and Prilly spent a whole day by my patio doors non stop sqwaking leaving me to panic luckily another Omletter put my mind at rest and assured me this was normal, sure enough the next day they were pretty happy and quiet (mind you I did yell at them that if they carried on they would be finding out what the Colonals secret formula was in his KFC :D )
