Keeping the hens out of the house

Recommended Posts

Help!!

I am a complete newbie to all this and it is going really well, with the three chooks settling in nicely. THe problem is that they see my little conservatory as an extension to their play space in the garden. Probably because it is glazed all the way to the floor. Yesterday I tried keeping the door open but they all kept coming in. I then put a barrier in the way, but one had a great time jumping over it several times. I am sure there must be others there who have had this problem so I would appreciate any advice on how to stop them.

Cheers in advance

Well mine, loved my house too. Til I shut the door. My children loved them coming in, but I did not appreciate poo on the carpet. One even took to sitting on the window sill and looking out, when OH let them in when I wasn't here!! That was 3 summers ago, when we first got the chickens. Don't get me wrong, I do love the girls but outside only. It might be different if I had hard floors though! :D

Mine are almost trained in as much as if I say out and move forward they go ..well that's the theory

At my kitchen door I have a child gate breought for the purpose and that works really well.I can have the door open and the gate shut but still come in and out .

Hi

I could perhaps kill two birds with one stone here ( apologies for the analogy) I need to sort out an area where I can still grow some veg, plus, possibly, secure my back door lol. Has anyone used the omlet fencing as this could be the answer to my problems, providing it works. I could fence off an area to grow veg, let me get from back door to the gate to escape lol, as well as keeping the chooks out of the hoose

But is it cost effective? I am a single woman so dont have a bloke around to build things lol

Fellow single woman here has found the omlet fencing largely pointless. They will get under the teeniest tiniest gap - goodness knows how they spot these! Mine also fly over it (I know I could clip their wings, but I've got this notion they stand a better chance against Mr Fox if I don't).

I might have another go at 're-installing' it and using about treble the number of tent peg thingies to secure it to the ground. - but I bought it so i could move the hens round the garden, and if it takes ages to put up and down, it's become a lot less useful.
