Obsession: the perfect collection of chickens (with pix)

Recommended Posts

HELP I'm in danger of obsessing  - well, actually I think I've been doing it for quite some time but have only just realised so this is a kind of 'I'm an alcoholic' moment

My obsession is the creation of a perfect chicken flock for my garden. To be 'perfect' I 'must have' not too many for the space (not more than 10) and not too few (no fewer than 3), a balance of colours (gold / buff / red; white; and black /grey / cuckoo) and a balance of breeds (currently Silkie, Poland and Frizzle but I'd love an Orloff or two)

Am I on my own :anxious: or is there anyone else out there suffering from this sort of madness? OH says I must be a one off :( because I have been thinking of re-homing my cuckoo and white Frizzles all because I can't find a buff one. HELP spoilt tantrum coming on. I may have to lie on a supermarket floor and scream :lol:

Have you not seen my threads on multi coloured eggs and pekins?!

I have one b i g hen amongst my littlies and she sticks out, literally, like a sore thumb, but even though she is a bit knackered, she won't be going anywhere until she is ready!

I used to have a thing about having two of each type of chicken, but, what with nature being what it is, that's gone a bit squiffy. A cuckoo and a white frizzle sound like a nice pair - don't evict them!

I see my little flock as a gently evolving and changing, fluid kind of thing. It's like gardening - it takes a while for your ideas to become reality!

Thanks for understanding Chicken deficient Your words

are bringing me to my senses :D Don't worry I won't be evicting anyone :shameonu: but I'll still plan for the future and keep on looking for that buff Frizzle

I know what you mean about a large lady amongst petite girls. A few years ago I took on a fairly elderly and large black Poland x Frizzle and she will certainly live out her time here. For one thing, every time I look at her she makes me laugh because with her black feathers going up over her yead the 'wrong way' like a hood, she always reminds me of that advert for Scottish Widows

Here she is - a very elegant lady

I think this one is my prettiest chicken and also one of my sweetest natured. She used to be a buff but has recently developed some black tinges to her tail and neck feathers which, though probably totally wrong for the standard, I find really pretty. She was my frist Silkie and I've had her 4 years now :D Long may she live

 HeHe Shabby Chic I know exactly what you mean!

The other day I cought myself wondering if I could trade in my (much loved but miss matched) girls for some much coveted silver laced wyandotte bantams or a polish flock

Naughty Chicken Mummy :shameonu:

I LOVE silver laced Wyandotte and my son loves Polish girls

But as our house is a suburban rented semi I guess I'm lucky that I can keep Hens at all

Hello Amy, I'm so glad I'm not totally on my own when it comes to entertaining dreadful chicken Mummy thoughts. :shameonu: But guess what . . . I have struck lucky today as this very morning I got a message that my kind Frizzle breeder has a dear little buff frizzle girl growing up for me now so I'll have the perfect flock yet  (Haven't told OH mind :anxious: )

As for Polands, I admit that if I was to start all over again from scratch, I'd probably have a Poland only flock. Though they do take a little extra time when their hair dos need to be dried on rainy days, I love them. They are so friendly and chatty as well as being pretty as pretty and mine lay well too without going broody. A Poland only flock would please OH too as it would mean a flock of just 5 chickens. But then one day I would like a Russian Orlof . . . . and a Sulmtaler boy, and a little blue Silkie  I know, I'm beyond redemption

HeHe Shabby Chic she is gorgeous! and doughnut is such a cute name.

Fraid I'm going to have to wait till my girlies get older and I have an excuse to replenish my stock...

But I'm busy prettyfiying my garden so I have managed to displace my designer hen obsession

Sort of :!:

Thank you everyone for being so kind about my chickens and little Doughnut :D They do make a cute collection. When I started chicken keeping, what I really wanted were 3 'normal' chickens, not for their eggs but for their company and for the lovely, calming clucking noise that normal hens make. Alas OH said 'no biggies and not scratchers' so now, rather than 3 good egg layers I have a mottly collection of 10 cuties who are not exactly good layers  I think I'll always harabour a secret longing for biggy scratchers, but I'll just have to go green at other people's photos on here and wonder if there is anyone else with these secret longings
