Helenfmb
Just wondering what a Bantam is? Is it a breed do hen or a generic term? Seen it written a lot but not sure. Thanks
Chickabee
Hi, a Bantum is just a small breed of poultry. They originated in Southeast Asia (good old google)
Lewis
A Bantam is a smaller version of a Large Fowl breed. For example you can get Large Fowl Wyandottes or Wyandottes bantams, LF Sussex or Sussex bantams. Lots of breeds have a large fowl and a bantam version, though there are the True Bantams which are small breeds which don't have a Large Fowl version... These are something like a Serama, Sebright or Belgian bantam.

Redwing
Officially birds that have a large fowl counterpart are called 'miniatures' these should be one quarter of the size/weight of the large fowl In reality though people do call them bantams and most are up to half the size so 'officialdom' goes out the window a bit and this seems to have been universally adopted by chicken keepers and breeders True bantams as Lwescott says have no large fowl version and are the official bantams so to the layman a bantam is a small chicken
