WitchHazel
If so, what do you think of it? I've read the claims, is it as good as it says? Will it really replace my Vitamix and my top-end food processor?
Grandmashazzie
Not me , far too expensive.DD friend has one ,she's veggie and swears by it but she makes lots and lots of soups and casserole stuff.
sadietoo
In time honoured Omlet fashion, although I had no idea what one of these is or does, I had to have a look to see if it would be a new Omlet Must Have.... mmmm bit too pricey for that I'm speaking out of turn I know, as I've already admitted I'm an ignorant luddite when it comes to these, but personally, I'd also be put off by the fact you seem to have to buy them from the manufacturer, rather than a retailer, this always seems like a more pressurised sell to me, and strangely seems to be the preferred method with expensive alternatives to high street brands ( My late father in law was once talked into buying an all singing all dancing electric reclining chair by a salesman, for over £6k when, had he consulted us, we could have got him something very similar for less than half that price through a specialist shop). I can see its uses in a professional kitchen though, but as an exceedingly lazy cook, I hate dismantling things to wash them up, so whenever possible I use a hand held mandoline, knife or grater in favour of getting out the food processor, and a hand held stick blender (£5 from Sainsbugs) for doing sauces, soups and covering the kitchen worksurfaces with splashes
Lavenders_Blue
I just had to Google Thermomix as I hadn't heard of it either. I can't see how it would be better than a Vitamix (which I am still coveting but have not, as yet, been able to justify buying ).

I can't see how it would be better than a Vitamix (which I am still coveting but have not, as yet, been able to justify buying ). I have a Vitamix already, and reading the reviews and looking at the detail I would expect the Thermomix to do even more than the Vitamix can. I'd have to sell my Vitamix and my food processor I think to get anywhere near justifying the swap.... but I'm reluctant to do so unless I'm really sure that the Thermomix is going to give me something more. I'm since discovered that they do demos, both public and in-home. I think I'll go to a public one to see if it's worth taking any further. I wondered about the direct selling, but I've learned quite a bit more about it now by reading about other peoples experiences. For example, when you buy a machine, you get a two hour session included to make sure that you can get the best out of the machine. Also, according to what I have read (and we'll see if it turns out to be true) the company recognises that few people who go to a demo are ready to buy a machine there and then and so the demos aren't pressured. I hate the washing up part too, and that definitely impacts on my use of appliances. My Vitamix gets used a lot - most days in fact - because all it takes is a quick rinse. My food processor doesn't get used very often because there are too many parts that need washing afterwards and, although they are supposedly dishwasher proof the advice is not to do so because it makes the bowls fragile. My mixer gets used a lot because the metal bowl and the beaters are all dishwasher safe. The Thermomix is alledgedly like the Vitamix in terms of ease of cleaning, and the bits are properly dishwasher-able. I am aware that it's a ridiculous amount of money to spend... but I am intrigued to find out whether the people who bought one really do think it's worth it. Egluntyne
Am resurrecting this thread because I went to a Thermomix demo last night. I am very tempted. There was no hard sell at all. The demo was fun, with 5 or six dishes made, all of which were fabulous, and we all had a turn at the controls. It is very expensive, but robust, and can do so many more things than a bog standard mixer. I think I may have to raid my piggy bank. BlueSilver
Never heard of this before, but blimey, it really is all singing, all dancing. I wonder, how the warranty on it? I have bought things with moving parts only to have it be discontinued after a few years so parts became a problem. Still, a nice bit of kit! /covet
WitchHazel
Ooh, Eg, that's really interesting to hear that you have been tempted. I still haven't been to a demo, I'm waiting until I can afford one first. I've been actively *not* looking at them for several months now, although I have been putting away my Quidco earnings, "just in case". I don't want yet another appliance on the counter. If I got one, I'd have to get rid of my Vitamix, so it would have to be able to do what that can do . DH is away in May and June, I might go to a demo while he's not here. Was yours a home demo or a public one? If you get one, I'd love to hear what you think.
Egluntyne
Apparently there are ways of buying them by instalment. Re the warranty, it is 2 years. The demonstrator yesterday said that his machine was going strong after 4 years. UK website As luck would have it, my Magimix and ancient Kenwood Chef are both on their last legs and to replace them would cost a fortune, so I'm convincing myself that it would be cost effective to buy the Thermomix. BlueSilver
Oh, thou temptress! Gah. I have several other things I need to get squared away cost wise first, but the temptation, it burrrrrnnnnns I have appliances everywhere and not enough counter space, so they're stashed in low cupboards (which I struggle now to get anything out of due to not being so bendy anymore). Would be nice to just have one thing rather than eight separate machines.

quickcluck
I read an article recently. A lady uses one of these when camping in her caravan. She says it cuts down on equipment that she needs to take, and uses it to it's full capacity...
BlueSilver
The cutting down on equipment is one of my primary reasons for considering it; got a crock pot, blender, scales, food chopper, and they're all shoved in various cabinets which are getting harder got me to bend down to reach. One item that does the lot would save so much space.
Egluntyne
It's here! They sent a text to say it would arrive between 10.15 and 11.15. The doorbell rang at 10.15! Excellent service. I've made a fruit sorbet which was divine and have some dough proving to make bread rolls later and will be tackling an asparagus risotto for supper, which will stir itself. Heaven. WitchHazel
How is it going Egluntyne? Did it replace any equipment you already had?
Egluntyne
Fab! Yes, definitely. My elderly Magimix is now languishing in the garage. I've made asparagus risotto three times. It is a doddle and absolutely delicious, without all that standing, stirring and ladling. I've made foccaccia, bolognese sauce, custard, fruit sorbet. Am loving it. WitchHazel
Thanks Egluntyne, that's really interesting. I'm ging to go to a public demo sometime this month, will be interested to hear of any successes or failures you have in the meantime. Egluntyne
Keep meaning to photograph food made in the Thermomix. Here is a fruit sorbet I made yesterday. It was divine. I have made several different types over the last few weeks. The mango one was orgasmic. This one is mixed summer fruits. Veeeery nice. WitchHazel
Thanks Egluntyne. I'm very close now, I've sold my Vitamix and I now have enough cash, I just need to organise a demo. Keep posting
