Valkyrie
Poor old Mini has been moulting since December so been a little out of sorts (didn't stop her from pecking Tipsy in the bird bath though) but the last couple of days she's been hanging back from the crowd. Still runs to catch up if they wander somewhere else. Today I got her some nutri drops. It was tea time and her crop was virtually empty. I gave her corn which she did eat some but not anywhere near enough. She was wormed last month and she had the drops to keep the other nasties at bay. She is fine and louse free although lots of feathers are still growing and still have the protective porcupine covering. Looked to see if her bottom was fine - couldn't find it so had a grope around and I found a lump. It isn't sore looking but am off to the vets. A very nice man I have met before nearly 5 years ago. He has light Sussex. So it may be doom and gloom later or fingers crossed for it to be easily sorted. Meh, this is the bit I hate.
Ain't Nobody Here
Oh dear . Hope it's nothing sinister .
Valkyrie
Well the lump I found wasn't. It was symmetrical and was her pelvic bone! How embarrassing. But he didn't find anything at first and just thought it was perhaps her time to go considering her age. But then he had a squidge in a different angle and found there was a hard lump internally. He reckoned it was an ovarian tumour which is a common thing in chickens. So I was quite in agreement she should stay with him. I knew she was in kind hand so RIP Mini. I only have one of Egg Lou's babes left now. Sad but it happens and glad I didn't let her suffer any longer. Thanks ANH xxx
mollyripkim
Oh what a shame, I thought it was going to be a good outcome when I first started reading. Really sorry you lost her.
Valkyrie
Thanks - I wouldn't have found it and as with chickens it's not until they look sad that you realise something is wrong. But I found an interesting article on chickens that have flax seed in their diet seem to show some sort of immunity to that particular disease. As it happens they have the same type as humans so I gather they are wondering if humans add it to their regular diet it will also work. Food for thought - and it can't hurt to try. I think it's high in omega wotsits and so all good.
igobarefoot
Oh no, I too thought it was going to be a happy outcome when I started reading your post. So sorry to hear, it's been a tough start to the year for losing our girls. Thinking of you x
Ain't Nobody Here
I thought the same - what a shame .
Valkyrie
I'm wondering if a lot of deaths are down to the rotten weather we've been having. It certainly gets me down and my girls just don't want to come out in the morning lately. When the sun shines it's a different matter. Perhaps a sun lamp would do them all a bit of good. Just had a vision of them wearing sunglasses!!
The Dogmother
Sorry to hear that Val. I always think that winter is a 'leveller' with chickens; itweeds out the older or poorly ones.
newcountrygirl
Sorry to hear this. At least you were vigilant.
Valkyrie
All the others popped off in the summers! Couldn't stand the heat or whatever reason - I must be related! And thank you xx
staceychristie
Oh Dear, sorry to hear that (( )). Our Vera has had a big bum for ages, and we even had a scan, which was not conclusive. When they act strange, it's time to examine them, and you did the right thing. Vera still got a big bum, but she's healthy, and still the boss, and we're grateful of every extra day we have her. Trouble is (especially ExBatts) that they aren't meant to be here as long as pures. Bless them all Staceyhen
Valkyrie
Thank you for the hugs staceychristie. We got 2 new ladies soon after and seems to be going well all together now.
