alisontaylor
Hi Everyone, I need some help, one of my pekin bantams was attacked this afternoon by a cat. Our neighbour kindly rescued her and has kept her warm and safe. She has two bites on her neck, which they have cleaned up. She is obviously in shock. She has a drink but nothing to eat, we are keeping her in the house in a cardboard box. Should we take her to the vet? is there anything they could do for her? Or is it a matter of time and she will go one way or another? Thank you Alison (and Princess layer)
Luvachicken
Oh dear, poor little thing. If it was mine I would take her to the vets. I think cat bites can be a bit "dirty" and he may be able to give you something to sort her out. I hope she is ok. Let us know how you get on. Egluntyne
I would definitely take her to a vet. She may need antibiotics, and the wounds should be properly assessed.
mollyripkim
Poor thing, would definitely take to a vet as well as cat bites can cause lots of infection. Hope she is ok.

Luvachicken
Awww, sorry to hear she's not looking so good. Perhaps all the stress of the afternoon has taken it out of her. Hopefully, a good nights sleep indoors will do her good and she will feel perkier in the morning. Fingers crossed xx

acw295
how sad, poor chicken and what a shock for you - hope she recovers. We have 3 cats but luckily they get on very well with our Pekins - I think it helps that they are our cats though - they all sit in the garden together and the chooks happily eat the cats' food with the cats looking on in disgust! I wouldn't be confident about strange cats though - luckily we live remotely so no neighbours to worry about. If it's not foxes there is always something else to worry about isn't there
auntielizzie
Just wondering how the patient is today? Hope she is going to pull through, poor little thing. Never thought a cat would attack a chicken like that
LunaKiw1
I hope she's OK. One of our 3 chools survived being in a fox's mouth - OH was fortunately looking out of the kitchen window when the fox got over the Omlet netting at 3pm in the afternoon last summer and grabbed Daisy by the neck. OH dashed out and the fox got a bit confused about how to escape and after carrying Daisy dangling in his mouth for 20 feet or so he dropped her and leapt over the perimeter fence. Daisy just picked herself up, shook her feathers and staggered back into the Eglu to which her two sisters had already sensibly retreated. We brought Daisy inside but couldn't see any marks so we put her back with the others to recover. We fully expected her to die from shock overnight but next day she was right as rain and 9 months on she's still perky as ever!
alisontaylor
Thanks for all your messages. She made it through the night but still wasn't good still not lifting head up on her own. Just taken her to vet again and they had to put her to sleep. So sad but for the best .

Didn't think when we got them we would get this attached ! Thanks for your support.
Purplemaniacs
Ahh how old is your little girl? It is horrid when they lose a pet but I think it is a valuable lesson in life and death which sadly your children encounter at some point in their lives. Can she help you to choose a the new chicken? Have you just got one left now? Hugs from East Northants to you and your DD. Chrissie
alisontaylor
Thanks she is only 6.yes she will help choose the new one/s. We only got 2 as we are new to chickens but def think we need more than 2 now after this. I agree a valuable life lesson part of the reason we got the chickens as pets to care for and so kids could take some resposibility. Although sad looking forward to new chickens already! Sorry to hear your news. I always recommend that folks get at least 3 to start with; you sometimes get a hen which will pine when the other one is in the nest, and then there's the possibility of a death... Most reputable suppliers won't sell just one hen, as it's not recommended to introduce just the one.
