Alis girls
OH and I are having a quick hotel break with out the kids in August. We want to visit Canterbury. Any hints for rainy and sunny days. If its hot we want to be outside, and inside if bucketing it down. I am hoping to book a PG tips afternoon tea for us (2 for 1 _ sad I know). Thanks everyone. HarrisonFamily
How old are the children and what do you like ???? Canterbury lacks toy shops but good museums....and wingham wildlife park near canterbury is great...
Purplemaniacs
I think Alis is looking for adult things to do, the children aren't going. Sorry never been to Canterbury so I can't help. Chrissie
HarrisonFamily
Yes sorry I read that wrong..... I have only been with the children....but always fancied a boat ride down the canals with a glass of wine or 2...
Daphne
I like to just wander the streets - lots of ancient buildings And the Cathedral of course, but it is a bit pricey to get in. And car parking is expensive and you have to pay everywhere. I think its really offputting and short-sighted of the council, but of course as there are so many visitors they probably don't care too much The countryside around Canterbury is very nice as well so you could maybe have a night in country pub or something like that
Mrs Webmuppet
I used to live in Hawkinge (on the old RAF Hawkinge airfield) which isn't too far from Canterbury. There's loads of pretty pubs to visit outside of Canterbury. If you want a bit of history I can recommend a visit to the Battle of Britain museum in Hawkinge followed by a pint in the Cat and Custard Pot pub in Paddlesworth which was where the airmen from RAF Hawkinge went for a pint. Alis girls
When you say expensive to park what are we talking for a day? cant be any worse than NW London.
Daphne
I can't remember, but I do remember being annoyed They have those car parks where you have to enter the reg no etc and I'm afraid I have zero patience with all that. I did a project on how market towns can attract visitors and car parking is a major issue for many people, I'm afraid it is a bugbear with me. Added to that car parking charges are a huge issue where I live in the UK. Our district council is in another town and they have no car parking charges whatsoever......so I think I am more than usually sensitive to the whole thing And breathe. No, I'm sure it will be cheaper than London And it is definitely cheaper than Brighton
Mrs Webmuppet
The park and ride in Canterbury is the best value, I think it's £3 per day.
Alis girls
Just wanted to say thanks to you all for your suggestions - we went to Canterbury Cathedral which was lovely - and pottered round the shops - Omlet effect kicked in as I had (yes HAD to ) to go in Lakeland and spent £8 (we have one opening soon round here). Yersterday we did Leeds castle - bit disappointed in it but grounds were lovely. And got lost in maze and had to be led out by the nice man who worked there Hotel good - ate far too much and did get a swim in to counteract choccie mousse devoured the night before. (On WW and just hit below 11stone so dont want to go up again) Did park and ride (£3) thanks - very efficient and OH put up with me blathering on about " well someone on Omlet says blah blah blah" but you were spot on. Thanks everso everyone- Ali x
