Leicester_H
Hi On BBC Breakfast this morning they reported that people who illegally download material (music, video etc) would be sent warning emails from next year. Was this poor reporting as I don't see how they could do this ? How would they find out who was using the computer at the IP address and how would they find out their email address ? Lewis
I've heard similar that it will happen as of January 2015. I don't bother downloading anything on my laptop anymore, just use iTunes but would be interested to see how they'll do it... and who will be sending the letters? Geoid
The only way I could think of them doing this is by: Getting IP address Find out which ISP is using that email address Ask ISP to provide details of who is using that IP address Ask ISP if they have the email address of the bill payer for that IP address (when you sign up to broadband etc you normally have to provide an email address or something, or the email account that was created when you signed up) Send email
Willow
That is actually very irresponsible reporting by the BBC there are already scammers who have infected some download sites of games that lock up your screen and say you have illegally downloaded something and must pay a fine and present a credit card option to pay. One of my sons's friends downloaded a game and got infected on an evening his parents were out. Fortunately he rang my son in a panic who rang us (we were also out) and we were able to ring his friend tell him it was a scam and not to worry. We dropped in on our way home and he was still in a terrible state so we looked at the pc and explained what they had done (since we both know about info security he did finally believe us). But he was so scared the police were going to turn up and arrest him he was one step away from using his parents credit card when he rang my son. The Dogmother
Very odd, can't see how it would work as very few people have a dedicated static IP address, most have a selection or range of addresses, and they usually change each time you log on. How odd. Our router IP address only changes a couple of time a year (if that) - we're with PlusNet. OH opened account and he does use the PlusNet email, however, one doesn't have to, and so warning emails could go unread - so not much use. (I use Gmail.) How odd. Our router IP address only changes a couple of time a year (if that) - we're with PlusNet. I would imagine so, if you kept logging on each time (if you had a modem, not a router) then you would be assigned a new IP address each time. But since your router is always connected to the internet, the IP address will only change if you restart the router. I think my IP address has been the same for almost a year now. The Dogmother
That's odd then, mine seems to change between 4 or 5 IPs quite frequently. As Leicester_H has said, I also have an email address which came with my provider account - I never use it, in fact I can't remember the exact address or password, so any emails would go unread.
